Seetha

Frowning in confusion, I glanced at Aayush, now seated beside his father, while I stood next to him.

Mama's voice echoed through the room as he spoke,

"Aayush, Seetha... ivaru dhaan Aayush oda mama. Jaya's brother"

(Aayush, Seetha... this is Aayush's uncle. Jaya's brother)

Ohh.

I turned to the old man and offered him a polite smile, but before I could say anything, Aayush's voice cut through the air,

"Inga yedhukku pa vandhirukkaaru?"

(Why has he come here, dad?)

I glanced down at him, then at Mama, who offered a nervous smile before turning to the old man.

Then, clearing his throat, he looked back at my husband and said,

"Aayush, he came to see you"

Aayush, however, didn't waver as he locked eyes with his maternal uncle and asked,

"Ivlo naal paakanum'nu nenaikkaama, inniku mattum yedhukku enna paakanum'nu vandhirukkinga?"

(All these years, you never thought of seeing me, so why have you come now?)

He is right, though.

But Mama gently grabbed his hand and said,

"Aayush, enna irundhaalum avaru un mama. Nee nalla irukkiyaanu paathuttu poga vandhirukkaaru, da"

(Aayush, no matter what, he is your uncle. He just came to see if you are doing well before leaving)

Aayush nodded his head with a blank expression, saying,

"Ohh"

Before turning to the old man and speaking in a firm voice,

"En appa enna nalla paathukuraaru. Naan nalla dha irukken. Enakku'nu oru nalla life'um avaru amachu kuduthirukkaaru. Paathuttinga'le? Kelambunga. Illaanaa vera edhaadhu investigate pannanumaa?"

(My father has taken good care of me. I am doing just fine. He has given me a good life. You've seen it now, haven't you? You may leave. Or do you need to investigate something else?)

His words were sharp, direct, and unapologetic.

The old man's gaze dropped in guilt, unable to meet Aayush's eyes.

I glanced at Mama, who let out a heavy sigh before squeezing his son's hand and saying in a firm but calm voice,

"Aayush, please. Behave yourself"

The room fell into an awkward silence.

I have to do something.

Clearing my throat, I looked at the old man and asked,

"Coffee kudupe'laa?"

(Shall I get you some coffee?)

He lifted his face slightly and shook his head, saying,

"Illa ma, venaam"

(No, dear. It's okay)

But I wasn't going to take no for an answer. Smiling, I asked again,
