One Last Time

Aayush
I was sitting beside our seventeen year old daughter, Vithura, who was scrolling through her mobile, while I watched a TV show.
From the kitchen, I could hear my wife and our fourteen year old son, Virulan, cooking dinner together — laughing and chatting in between.
I looked at my daughter and asked,
"Maa.. amma'ku poi help namma panlaamaa?"
(Maa... shall we go help amma in the kitchen?)
"Naan varla, pa.. enakku bore adikudhu"
(I'm not coming, pa... I feel so bored)
She said, still with her eyes glued to her phone.
I smiled slightly at her, and then turned my gaze back to the TV.
A few minutes later, we heard,
"Dinner ready!!"
.....called out by our son.
I smiled, tilting my head back to look at him, and said,
"Naangalum saapda ready.."
(We're also coming now..)
He grinned at me, and left back inside the kitchen.
Then I looked back at my daughter and asked,
"Saapda polaamaa, Vithu?"
(Shall we go eat, Vithu?)
"Five minutes pa please..."
She mumbled.
"Okay"
I said with a smile, ruffling her hair before getting up to sit at the dining table.
We all gathered there, even appa, who looked at Vithu still sitting on the couch with her mobile.
He glanced back at me, and I told him softly,
"She's sending some assignments, pa"
He nodded, and we sat together waiting, until Seetha raised her voice from the kitchen,
"Vithura! Nee ippo andha phone'eh keela vachuttu vandhu saapudriyaa illayaa?!"
(Vithura! Are you putting that phone down now and coming to eat, or not?!)
Immediately, Vithu sulked, kept her mobile on the charger, and went to wash her hands at the sink.
Seetha murmured under her breath,
"Ivala naan enna panna poren'ne therila"
(I really don't know what I'm going to do with this girl)
"Seetha..."
I called softly, and she replied,
"Seri pa, naan unga ponna onnum sollala"
(Alright, I won't say anything about your daughter)
....twisting her lips at me before sitting beside me.
I smiled at her.
And once Vithu joined us, we all finally started to eat together — as one family.
