The clock ticked softly in the heavy, unbearable silence.
Nandini stood still near the center table, feeling like the air around her was too thick to breathe.
Her fingers clutched the edge of her dupatta so tightly that her knuckles had turned white, but she didn't notice. Her heart thudded painfully, not from fear anymore, but from a deep, gnawing guilt that refused to leave her.
Just then,
The front door slammed open with a loud thud.
Preeti and Vikram stormed in with others, everyone were present there even Vaibhav and his family too.
Their faces were set in cold, angry expressions, a sight that pierced straight through Nandini's heart.
Preeti's face was flushed with rage, her breathing heavy. Vikram looked equally furious, his jaw clenched so tightly that a nerve in his neck visibly twitched. They both stopped a few feet away from her, their eyes burning with betrayal and hurt.
Preeti was the first to break the silence.
She pointed a trembling finger at Nandini, her voice sharp, almost shrill with emotion.
"How could you, Nandini?!" she shouted, each word laced with disbelief and heartbreak.
"How could you not trust us? We were like Your own family! And instead, you put your faith in a stranger?!"
Nandini's lips parted as if to speak, but no sound came out. Her throat felt choked, dry as dust. Her tears blurred her vision.
Vikram stepped forward, his voice deep and cold as steel.
"We gave you everything," he said, his hands balling into fists at his sides, trying to contain his boiling anger. "Love. Support. Respect. You were like our own daughter. And what did you give us in return, Nandini? He let out a bitter, humorless laugh.
"Distrust. Humiliation."
Nandini shook her head desperately, fresh tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I... I didn't mean to hurt you uncle... I swear... I know it's completely my fault but..." her voice cracked midway, barely above a whisper.
Preeti stepped closer, and for a moment, Nandini felt as if she might collapse under the weight of that gaze, a gaze full of love that had now turned into sheer devastation.
