Amrit pushed open her room door and walked into the cozy living room, her face meticulously put together though her eyes were still red-rimmed from what had transpired with Akshat. She adjusted her dupatta and pursed her lips into a courteous smile, not wishing anyone to see the tempest brewing inside her.

"Amrit beta, tum kab aayi!" Vishakha's chattering voice rang out as soon as she saw her. "Akshat bhi to sath tha, wo kahan hai?"

Amrit hesitated for a fraction of a second before answering. Her fingers toyed with the edge of her dupatta as she tried to sound casual, "Wo... wo Maa, Akshat ki important meeting hai. Aur mujhe padhai karni thi... isliye mai aa gayi."

Her voice was low, yet her throat was parched like paper.

"Haan aur tum log time se aa gaye the, to Preeti ke apartment kyun nahi aaye function me?" Rakshit asked, taking a sip of his coffee and scrutinizing her.

She forced a weak smile, masking her turmoil with a rehearsed nod. "Bas... zaroori kaam tha...exams aa rahe ussi ki preparation."

Before anyone could ask more, Vishakha talked at her usual excited state. "Waise hamara dobara milna kitna zyada unexpected tha na!"

"Wahi to!" Sarla joined in warmly. "Laga hi nahi tha dobara milna hoga... aur ab dekhiye, kaise ham dobara mile... wo bhi relatives ban kar."

Amrit's brows furrowed immediately. Her eyes flicked from Vishakha to Sarla, confusion etched on her face.

She moved slowly and sat down next to Sarla, her body tense, as if entering virgin soil. "Mujhe samajh nahi aa raha... kya baat ho rahi hai? I mean... Mummy aap yahan aa chuki hain?" Her voice shook ever so faintly towards the end.

Sarla smiled at her readily, without any inkling of the tempest that these words were to create within her daughter. "Haan beta, tumhari Mummy yahan aa chuki hain... hamse mil chuki hain."

Amrit blinked furiously, struggling to believe that. Mummy. here? Her gut contracted.

Vishakha stretched forward with a wistful smile. "Meri aur Rakshit ki engagement party me... uss time hi ham inse mile the. Par coincidence dekho, hame kya pata tha ki ye hamari samdhan hongi future me.

The words struck Amrit like a shock. Her breathing caught. Her hand grasped the rim of her dupatta so tightly her knuckles became white. She turned slowly toward Sarla, her mother sitting there, calm and smiling.

And in that moment, something flashed back in her mind, Akshat's face that day. The way his face had changed when he caught sight of her mother... that brief moment of panic in his eyes... the way he'd rushed out without explanation...
