“Hey Emma, can you help Caroline and Kaylee get dinner started? Katie is up the road paying a visit to a woman from church who isn’t feeling well, and she’s going to have to prep for Thanksgiving tomorrow when she gets home.” Joe asked.

Emma had been on her way out the door to go ask her Momma if she could relax alone in the bunkhouse for a little bit and read. Hunters parents were supposed to be there soon and she wanted to recharge a little before then. She had watched Caroline and Kaylee working tirelessly on chores so she wasn’t going to refuse the request. Plus her Uncle Joe freaked her out a little. “Yes Sir. I’m just going to go grab my iPod.” Emma could feel her cousins look up at that.

“You go on back to what you were doing before you get whooped.” Joe threatened his daughters, both suddenly became very interested in peeling potatoes. “You don’t need that. You can talk to your cousins.”

“I will talk to them, I just can cook better with one headphone in.” Emma objected. She wasn’t sure what the big deal was. She almost always had at least one headphone in since the accident, but Hunter had asked her to tone it down here. She had too, this would be the first time that she was pulling it out that wasn’t at bedtime.

Joe rested his hands on the counter. “I said no. Now drop it.”

“Can I go talk to my dad?” Emma asked.

“No, now I don’t want to hear anymore about it.” Joe said. “He won’t like you going around me to him when I’ve already said no.”

Emma could tell his temper was just simmering. She knew that he wasn’t used to being questioned. She wasn’t sure if Hunter would be upset with her for disobeying her Uncle Joe and even more than that she did NOT want the man to spank her. “Yes Sir.”

“Good.” Joe said, walking out of the kitchen.

“Sorry he said no.” Kaylee said, after she heard the front door shut.

Emma wasn’t sure how these girls lived everyday like this. She could do it for a week. She pasted a smile on her face. “Different strokes for different folks I guess. Tell me how I can help.” She started making a rosemary bread and really did enjoy the time with her cousins.

A few minutes later Amy came into the kitchen. “Smells good, ladies. Do you need help?”

“I think we have it Aunt Amy, thank you.” Kaylee said.

Amy tugged on one of Emma’s curls. “Do you want your iPod?”

Emma blushed, “No thank you.”

“Daddy said don’t use it all the time, not never.” Amy said.

“It’s fine, Momma.”

“Daddy told her she couldn’t have it.” Caroline said.

“Why?” Amy asked, looking confused.

“He said I needed to talk with my cousins. It’s fine.”

“You should have asked to talk to Daddy or I we would have told him it’s no big deal.”

“It is no big deal either way…” Emma said.

“Besides, she did ask to speak to Uncle Hunter and Daddy said no.” Caroline supplied.

Gosh, for being such a religious household this little girl was really a gossip, Emma thought. “Its okay. We are enjoying the time.”

“You asked to speak to Daddy and Uncle Joe said no?”

“Momma…”

“Yes or no?” Amy interrupted.
