Chapter 8 -- Student

Constantine. Jake had been repeating the name over and over in his head ever since Rex had told him about it last night. It sounded so familiar to him, but he just couldn't think where he'd heard it. To think that just one vampire by the name of an almost angelic sounding name could have caused such an uproar in this city. He found himself wondering about the origins of this vampire and was sorely tempted to ask Sister Mary about it since she was the smartest one that he knew of. But he was forbidden from asking one of his mentors for aid in his solo assignment, or risk shaming both himself as well as his mentors.

That didn't sound too bad but in the world of the Saint Shields, honour is the most important thing that one can have. It honestly sounded a bit too old fashioned for Jake's tasted but who was he to question generations of tradition? And besides, it never really worked out when people turned their back on tradition. Besides that Jake had had every single word of every tapestry branded into his mind. He may not have believed in them 100%, but he did have a certain respect for all of them. He just hoped that his respect for the 'rules of the Saints' wouldn't someday cost him his life.

Jake was walking down the sidewalk on his way to school now hoping that his face didn't look too banged up. He'd spent a bit of time in the bathroom covering up most of the bruises with some makeup. He wasn't ashamed to admit that he used make up, or that he knew how to apply it because he found all sorts of cosmetics useful in his line of work. Granted this did make him look pretty funny checking out of a store with all kinds of make up. He didn't mind though, the only time it really affected him was when one of the members of the gay community spotted him out and decided to make an advance. That's when things got beyond all forms of awkward, especially if the cashier happens to be a cute girl.

He was about to cross the street when he heard his name called out from behind him. He turned around and his cheeks began to heat up when he felt a pair of soft lips press up against his. He was frozen for a moment but regained himself soon enough and pushed the person who'd just kissed him away until they were at arm's length.

He wasn't surprised at all to see that the one who'd just kissed him was non other than Eve, and boy did she look smug about making him blush. "Aw, is the big bad Unrisen blushing?" She asked giving him a slight nudge with her shoulder.

"Oh shut up," Jake said turning away from her and was about to cross the street yet again but traffic decided to work against him and start going by again. He rolled his eyes and turned back to Eve who was still wearing a sly smirk on her face. He let out a sigh and swallowed his pride before speaking. "Hey Eve have you ever heard of a vampire by the name of Constantine?"

Eve open her mouth as if to respond but paused as if she were expecting to hear something else. Know she looked thoughtfully at him and put a dramatic finger to her chin just for the effect. "You know actually I think I have heard that name before."

"You have," Jake exclaimed not expecting for Eve to be of much help at all. Decided that he should press the subject Jake went on. "Can you tell me where you heard it?"

"I'm sorry Jake, I wish I could," Eve said looking like she was regretting not being able to help. "But even a witch's memory has it's limits you know? Why not ask Sister Mary or Father Matthew?"

Jake felt his body begin to slump down after hearing that. Figures, he thought. The one person I can talk to about this suggests the one source that I can't use. But he couldn't blame Eve for it, not like she knew about everything that was going on either. He let out a frustrated sigh and ran both his hands through his hair before sputtering his lips. He glanced back at Eve and saw that she was looking rather guilty about not being able to help him, which in turn made him feel guilty for getting frustrated right in front of her.
