Chapter 5 -- "Patrol"

"Go check on the Los Lobos," Jake repeated for what felt like the hundredth time since they left the church five minutes ago. "That's all he said and Sister Mary didn't seem too worried anymore about it."

"Still," Lance said over the roar of Jake's motorcycle holding onto Jake for dear life as they weaved in and out of traffic. "Don't you think her reaction was strange at all?"

Jake just shrugged in response unable to really voice his own opinions to Lance, especially after Father Matthew more or less negotiated their trial for them. He sent Jake and Lance on their way immediately after he demanded their trail be held together so Jake wasn't able to ask anything about it. He didn't mind it really, going for a ride to Santa Monica was just what he needed to cool off after his little encounter with Andrew and Wallace. Eve had chosen to stay behind at the church until her mentor Rayne came to pick her up and do whatever it is that witches did in there spare time.

Jake would be lying if he said that he wasn't worried about Sister Mary. She wouldn't say what it was that had gotten her so worked up on the phone but Jake wouldn't press the matter, if she didn't tell him after the first time he asked she wouldn't tell him at all. It was something that Jake would just have to deal with, she'd tell him whenever she was ready to tell him so there was no reason to press the matter, no matter how much he wanted to know.

Even though Jake was speeding through the streets of Los Angeles he had a sudden thought come to him. Was it his smartest idea, no, but it did have a certain something about it that seemed to him like it was definitely something he should do. Without bothering to tell Lance about his idea Jake took a hard right, ditching Santa Monica and cutting through Beverly Hills towards his new destination.

Lance realizing that they were no longer on course to Santa Monica spoke up. "Where you going?"

"Remember that one guy that we ran into?" Jake asked looking over his shoulder slightly and saw Lance's blank expression. "That blond guy who said that we were in a cult. The one that I got into a fight with outside of Millennium."

"Oh that guy that was talking about Devils and Hellhounds?" Jake confirmed Lance's recollection of the boy that Jake had gotten into a scrap with just days ago because he thought that the vampire he'd killed was something called a Devil. "Yeah I remember him, what about it?"

"Well, he asked if I was a Devil hunter too," Jake began and thought about his words before he said them because he didn't really want Lance getting the wrong idea here. "I figured since he's closer to the coast than us, why not ask him to help us out?"

"I don't suppose that could hurt-" Lance said though he didn't sound to confident with his own words to fully commit to this plan.

It didn't matter though, Jake was going to go see that boy whether or not Lance wanted to or not. He'd proven that he could definitely hold his own in a fight, Jake would even go as far as to say he'd had Saint like qualities. He obviously wasn't though otherwise he would've known what Lance was and wouldn't have thought them part of some form of cult. Though now that Jake thought about it. If he brought the boy up to Father Matthew he'd no doubt go and see this boy himself, which was the reason why Jake hadn't brought him up. He may have appeared human, but no human can just magically pull some daggers and machetes out of their arms.

It wouldn't take them too long to get to the campus since they were getting through the Hills anyway. Jake had bumped into this Eric Andrews once more while he was on a nightly patrol of western LA, and their second meeting wasn't much better than their first. Though Jake did offer to drive the other boy back to campus, which is how Jake knew where he would be. If anything he was curious about this boy because he didn't seem like a witch, and thank god he wasn't because he probably could've turned Jake into some unsightly thing when they were fighting before. For all he knew though he'd just discovered a new type of Being, now that would be an interesting discovery.
