Something unnerved Morrigan as she and Jack arrived at Courage Square. Whether it was the fact that the square was pitch black, without one of the normally illuminated lampposts emitting the safety that is light, or the eerie quiet of the area typically bursting with the sounds of life.
"Where is he?" Jack asked, looking up at the clock tower looming over them. "He's late."
"I said to come alone Miss Crow." His voice came from the shadows.
"Yeah, well, I'm here now. With her." Jack replied, defiant as ever. Morrigan however, could hear the nervous tremor of his voice.
Squall made a low humming sound, as if he were debating with himself in some unknown language.
"Fine. You may stay, but I won't be so lenient next time Miss Crow." Squall said, stepping out of the shadows ahead of them.
Seeing him again made something fragile inside of Morrigan finally break.
Who knows, maybe it was her heart.
A feral need for vengeance overtook her as she lunged at him. But Jack was too quick for her, he grabbed her arms, holding her back.
"What have you done with them?! Where are they?" She screamed, her voice raw with emotion, as she struggles to free herself from her "captor's" grasp.
"Calm down Morrigan!" Jack cried, strain lacing his voice.
"On second thoughts, maybe he is useful to keep around." Squall drawled.
Morrigan bears her teeth at him.
"You may have your friends back, Miss Crow." He informed, the unsaid but dancing in his lips
"However, there is one condition." He continued, when he sees that neither of the children are going to ask him what the catch is. "You must come to the Wintersea Republic to train with me, seeing as we have barely had a lesson since you became my apprentice, I think it would be wise to have you closer to where I can keep an eye on you."
"No. Morrigan you can't! Stop considering it." Jack says when he sees the look on her face.
"Jack I've got to. Let go." She said, pulling herself from his loosened grip.
"No you don't! What about your unit? What about uncle Jove? What about me?! You're just going to leave us?" He cried, tears welling in his eyes.
Tears were streaming down Morrigan face as well.
He always had more control. Morrigan thought.
"I'm sorry, but I can't abandon my friends." She whispered.
"We'll find another way.. Please Morrigan." Jack pleaded.
Morrigan turns away from him, because if she didn't, she might never leave.
"Let me see them first, I have to make sure they're..." her throat catches on her next word. "Alive."
"As you wish." Squall sighed, seemingly bored of the whole affair.
Her two friends appear from the darkness, banged up, but very much alive, and Morrigan nearly broke down right there.
A ring of wolves stops her from running and embracing her friends.
"Morrigan!" Cadence called. "Don't do anything dumb! We're ok!"
Squall stretches out his hand, distracting the answer from her lips.
"So, what is your decision Miss Crow?"
Morrigan slowly reaches out to him, their fingertips centimetres apart, when a cry from the other side of the square makes her stop.
"Mog! Don't!" Jupiter cried, sprinting towards them.
With a flick of his wrist, Squall has Jupiter flying into a wall with the power of a thousand bear-wuns.
Jupiter lets out a pained groan.
"Leave him alone" Morrigan roars, snatching her hand away from Squall's.
Hearing her patron, her rock through it all, groaning in pain because of this monster made Morrigan's blood boil.
The feral anger was back, And all she could see was...
