Fire engulfed Morrigan and in an instant Squall was recoiling, the heat blistering his skin.
Jack had run to his uncle's side, throwing his arm up to try to protect them both from the heat.
"Don't touch them again!" Morrigan roared from within the flames.
A fiery tendril extends towards Squall, but he deflects it with a blast of his own.
He starts towards Cadence and Hawthorne, but a wall of thorns shoot up from the ground, cracking the bricks beneath.
That doesn't stop him however.
The vines rearrange themselves as Squall gets closer, warping into a serpent's head, followed by its body.
It lunges towards Morrigan, seemingly immune to her fiery shield.
Morrigan's friends try to run as Squall approaches, but the Hunt shepherds them towards him.
Morrigan viciously shoots fire at the plant serpent, trying desperately to get to her friends, but her attempts are futile. The beast still rages against her and Squall is almost upon her friends.
Suddenly, a glinting dagger is embedding itself in his shoulder. He roars in pain as he turns to Jack, arm still outstretched from his throw.
A ball of acid comes hurtling towards Jack, but Jupiter pulls him aside.
The acid fizzles against the wall, where Jack's head had been moments before, carving a hole into the brick.
"ENOUGH!" Morrigan screamed, blasting her assailant with one last inferno and turning the vines into a pile of dust and ashes.
"Everybody stop!" And to her surprise, they did.
Time seemed to slow around her.
Tempus.
That's what she was doing, without even realising it.
Squall slowly locks eyes with her, shock and a sliver of something close to fear evident on his features.
He thought I couldn't do it. She thought
Well he was right, She couldn't. Until now.
"Enough" she murmured.
Morrigan approaches the shadowy wolves surrounding her friends, fire sparking on her fingertips. A blaze of heat disperses the wolves in her path, leaving only wisps of what were once formidable monsters.
Time speeds up again as she reaches her friends, relief clouds her focus, letting the hold on her power slip, relief that her friends were safe. That she couldn't protect them.
Squall makes for them, hands conjuring up some sort of deadly magic, but he stops, head jerking up, listening.
Suddenly he's fading, the hunt too.
He turns to Morrigan, now no more than a silhouette, and utters something she will never forget.
"You'll come begging for me to save you by the end Miss Crow."
And with one final blast of power, that sends mog flying, he is gone.
