My sister texted me right before school got out. Something about going to go help a friend. Not going to come home that night. Great. I thought to myself. The bell finally rang, and I got up, and left. Went to pick up Elisabeth, and drove home slowly. "How was your day, Lizzy?"
"Okay, I guess... Where is Kaia?"
"Uh... She's with some friends."
"It's okay, You can tell me the truth. I'm twelve, now."
"I don't really know... She didn't give me details. Just that she isn't coming home tonight."
"Oh, is it because dad left?"
"I donno, Lizzy."
And that was the end of all conversation for our car ride.
We stopped to eat, and didn't get back until late. Sometime around midnight.
We walked into the house, and it reeked of alcohol. I rushed Elisabeth upstairs, and walked into the living room to find mom sprawled on the couch. Drunk. Wait. Was dads car in the driveway? I thought, and I looked into the driveway. Damn. It is. I ran up the stairs, and into my parents room. "Dad?"
"Yeah, Brandon?"
"Please don't leave. Elisabeth needs you. Kaia needs you. I need you. Please."
"I don't think I should stay, though, Brandon. I feel like I'm causing more problems being here, then if I were to just leave."
"No. Please. Don't. If you leave, mom is going to be drunk and mad all the time. Please. I'm begging you."
"Brandon, I can't stay."
"Please. Please stay. Please, dad, this is my last resort. Do you really want to leave us here? Do you really want Elisabeth to grow up without a father? Please. I'm begging you."
"Fine. I'll stay, but it is just going to cause problems.."
"Thank you."
"Where are your sisters?"
"Elisabeth is in her bedroom, and Kaia is at a friends house."
"Oh, well call Kaia and tell her the good news."
