Rachel's phone vibrated and she had just fallen asleep. I didn't want to wake her up so I picked it up and walked out of the room. "Hello? I said into the phone.
"Excuse me is this Rachel? I'm Karen from the state department. I just need to schedule a meeting so we can talk."
"No. This is her friend Claire. Rachel is asleep."
"Oh, well can you get her my message, please and tell her to call me back?"
"Yeah..."
"Thank you so much. Nice talking to you."
"Yeah."
"Kay. Bu bye."
And with that, I hung up. A second later before I had even turned around
"Was that the call we've been dreading?" Rachel asked as she stood in the doorway to my bedroom.
"Yeah. The lady wants to meet with you and ask some questions."
"Claire, I don't wanna go..."
"I know, but what else are you gonna do, Rach?"
"I'll stay with you. I'll run away. We could run away together!"
"Rachel.. You can't run from this..."
"But... What am I supposed to do. I can't go on like this. I can't go through that.." She started to ball her eyes out.
I pulled her into me really close and kissed her forehead. We laid down on my bed and she continued to leave a puddle of tears on my shirt. This was gonna be a long night.
