The storm was a furious beast lashing out at the wooden cabin.
Rain hammered down in thick sheets, turning the orchard surrounding the house into a blurred watercolour of greens and browns.
Wind howled, a mournful cry that tore through the sturdy branches of mango and jackfruit trees, making them dance in a violent, desperate rhythm. Every now and then, a lightning bolt would rip open the inky sky, momentarily illuminating the thrashing foliage and the rain-slicked walls of the cabin, followed by a deafening crack of thunder that vibrated through the very foundations of the old structure.
Yash’s sleep shattered as a particularly loud clap of thunder rattled the windows.
The room was shrouded in darkness, save for a faint, ethereal glow seeping from the gap in the curtains – the distant garden lamp post bravely fighting against the gloom.
He blinked a few times, his eyelids heavy, struggling to shake off the profound exhaustion that had claimed him the moment he’d collapsed onto the bed.
It felt like an eternity since he’d known true rest.
His gaze drifted to the digital clock on the bedside table:
4:17
He remembered crawling into bed around 4:05 AM, shortly after Nehal had left.
Not much sleep, then, yet it felt like he’d been lost in slumber for hours.
He stared at the ceiling, his mind drifting to Nehal.
What was he doing right now?
Probably sleeping soundly, he mused.
Aside from the relentless, rhythmic drumming of the storm, the cabin had embraced an uncanny silence, a hushed stillness that felt almost expectant.
Yash took a deep breath, about to surrender to sleep once more, when a faint, almost tentative doorbell sound cut through the din.
His eyes flew open abruptly.
Silence returned, broken only by the insistent patter of raindrops against the glass windowpane.
He wondered if he’d imagined it.
Then, he heard it again. The doorbell rang.
Yash quickly sat upright in bed, his mind suddenly wide awake.
Yash’s first thought was Mayank.
Had he changed his mind and somehow come back, despite the raging storm?
If so, he surely would have called Nehal, his elder brother, before arriving.
Yash held his breath, listening for any tell-tale footsteps downstairs.
But apart from the relentless wail of the wind and the drumming rain, there was nothing.
“Nehal must’ve fallen asleep” Yash reasoned.
“He was injured and exhausted, so the doorbell probably couldn’t break his sleep.”
Yash swung his legs out from under the thin, star-and-moon printed blanket.
