Brighid and I had been married just three weeks, neither one of us really wanted to get married but felt it was our duty. After a while though we did start to become found of one another. She was different than other woman my father had introduced me to. Though she was born a princess she did not always act like one. To my somewhat surprise she was able to defend herself if the time called for it. Now as I lay beside her I could see our future, our children.
However, little did I know that today was going to be the worst day of my life.
I knew Brighid liked to go walking through the woods with two of her ladies maids. Since she knew how to defend herself I had no problem with it. I doubt anyone would want to attack their new princess. She would usually go to the far end of the forest turn around and come right back. Today though was a day I was with my father most of the day so I had not noticed how long she had been gone. The rain was coming down hard yet you could still see bits of the sunshine outside. I was distracted by the rain when one of Brighid's ladies maids came running to me sopping wet and crying.
"My lord!" the lass screamed as loud as she could.
I ran over to her and tried to hold her still so she could tell me what happened. Why wasn't Brighid with her? "What happened to ya lass?" I ask her trying to get a clear answer.
"The new princess she was attacked, we couldn't have saved her." the woman start to say.
"Where were ya?" I ask her.
"Outside the walls, in the woods trying to come back here my lord." she cries.
I hand her off to one of the other men and take off to the woods to find the other woman sitting with my wife's head on her lap. The woman didn't say a word nor did she look at me. I ran over and looked down to see Brighid lying there with her hand over a red spot on her dress.
"Brighid?" I ask as I fall down upon the earth and take her body in my arms. "Can ya hear me lass?" I ask praying to hear her voice one more time.
No reply came, I looked upon her. I see her eyes are closed and her hand was now away from her fatal wound. "What happened to you?" I asked not only Brighid but the other woman as well.
"We were walking through here as a short cut back to the castle and we were jumped by at least four men my lord, they held myself and the other maid back and threatened the princess that if she did not take them to you then they would kill her. She refused and they killed her my prince." the woman said as she put her head in her hands and began to weep.
I could hear people in the woods. I looked around and for a moment I saw a woman who looked just like Brighid. She wasn't just standing there though, there was a man beside her and she took his sword and killed him as another man ran past her, then she went after him.
"What madness is going on here?" I ask the ladies maid.
I took Brighid back to the castle to our room and laid her there upon our bed. I stood there for what seemed to be years praying that somehow some way she would awaken from her slumber. It never happened, the priest came in and took me to another room so that the ladies maids could put Brighid in her final dress. It was the dress I met her in. Dark green and brought out the color of her beautiful red hair. I couldn't have bared to watch them dress her in that state.
The next thing I knew the whole Island was in the throne room and there in the center lay my Brighid. Not only did I love her but so did Scotland and in such a short time. People came from miles to put flowers beside her. I walked up to her one last time. The crown upon her head and the dress made her look as though she was just sleeping, well that was what I wanted it to be but I knew the truth.
Four days later as we were to lay her to rest her body went missing. My men and I searched the land never to find her body.
I sat alone in our room for days with nothing but drink in my hand. I made a vow then that somehow some way I would find my love and be with her until my last breath.
