The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
Yuri lay on her bed, staring blankly at the ceiling as the dim light from the window flickered across the walls. Her breathing had slowed, uneven and shallow.
Her fingers twitched slightly.
"Ugh..."
Her stomach churned violently. A burning sensation spread through her chest and throat as the pills began tearing through her system.
"...damn it..."
Her body rolled slightly to the side as another wave of nausea struck her. The ceiling blurred in and out of focus.
For a moment... she almost laughed.
"Heh... figures..." she muttered weakly.
Her eyes drifted shut.
And suddenly—
Flames.
White. Crimson. Orange.
The battlefield roared around her.
Her younger self stood frozen in place as she watched a man collapse to the ground.
Kurenai Kentamo.
Blood spread beneath him like a dark ocean.
"KURENAI!!"
Her mother's scream echoed through the broken sky.
Yuri remembered everything.
The smell of smoke.
The heat.
The sound of Kurai's laughter.
Her father's hand reaching for her.
"Yuri... when you grow older... I want you to defeat Kurai."
Her younger hand trembled as he held it.
"Do everything you can... to win."
Yuri's eyes snapped open.
She rolled off the bed and hit the floor with a heavy thud.
"Ghk—!"
Her lungs burned. The room spun violently around her.
"...shit..."
Her hand pressed against the floor as she struggled to breathe.
The pills were hitting harder now.
Her heartbeat pounded in her ears like a war drum.
For a brief moment...
She wondered if this was it.
If she would finally just—
CRASH.
Glass shattered downstairs.
Yuri froze.
"...are you kidding me..." she whispered.
Heavy metallic footsteps echoed through the house.
Kurai-Bots.
Multiple of them.
A mechanical voice echoed from below.
"Target confirmed. Yuri Kentamo located."
Another voice responded.
"Secondary target: Shizune Kentamo."
Yuri's eyes widened slightly.
"...Mom."
Her body trembled violently as she tried to stand. Her legs nearly gave out beneath her.
The poison in her system made every movement feel like lifting mountains.
But the sound downstairs was unmistakable.
Her mother's voice.
"W–Wait! Please—!"
A loud crash followed.
Something broke.
Yuri clenched her teeth.
"...damn it..."
Her fingers curled into the carpet.
She slowly pushed herself upright, swaying like she might collapse at any moment.
Her vision blurred again.
"Couldn't you idiots..." she muttered weakly.
"...pick a worse time...?"
Another loud crash shook the house.
One of the Kurai-Bots spoke again.
"Eliminate all resistance."
Yuri staggered toward her bedroom door.
Her father's old black jacket still lay on the floor where she had thrown it earlier.
She grabbed it and forced it onto her shoulders.
For a moment, she paused.
Her hand rested on the sleeve.
"...Dad," she whispered quietly.
Then her expression hardened.
Her pinkish-red eyes flared faintly.
"Guess I'm not dying tonight."
She kicked the door open and stepped into the hallway.
Downstairs, three Kurai-Bots stood in the living room.
Shizune was pinned against the wall, one of the machines holding her by the collar.
All three robots turned their heads simultaneously.
"Target located."
Yuri leaned against the hallway railing slightly, breathing hard.
"...seriously..." she muttered.
One of the Kurai-Bots raised its arm cannon.
"Extermination commencing."
Yuri's eyes glowed faintly.
Even with poison burning through her body...
Even with the world spinning around her...
She smiled.
A small, bitter smile.
"Alright then..."
Her voice dropped.
"...come try it."
