*Rachel POV*
I heard the door suddenly open. I dropped the blade on the countertop out of shock. I stared at my wrist. There was nothing there. I didn't do it.
I put my sleeve up quickly.
Footsteps patted on the floor outside of the room. I stood incredibly still. What is happening? Is the house being robbed? I was behind a locked door. Hopefully I was safe.
"Rachel!" Called a very familiar voice. It was Dan. What is Dan doing here? Isn't he done with me? Am I awake? Is this a dream?
"Rachel! Are you home?" A different voice. Abby.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. I didn't want to be here. I wanted them not to find me. Do I want to disappear? Is that what I want?
"She's not in her room!" Abby yelled.
I heard the door knob jiggle. I looked at the door in front of me. Oh no.
"She's in here!" Dan's voice. Dan found me. "Rachel, let me in. I need to talk to you. We do."
I struggled to find any words. I didn't move.
"Rachel, please," Dan pleaded. There was sort of a desperation in his voice.
I had this odd urge to help him. I didn't like it when he sounded sad. But I stood still. I couldn't move.
"At least come to the door so I can talk to you."
My feet would not move. My chest started to stir uneasily, like the feeling I got before I cried, but I couldn't feel any tears coming.
...
An hour went by.
"I'm not leaving this door until you at least come to the door to hear what I have to say."
"She probably won't come out," Abby said, "Not until nighttime."
"I can't just leave her," Dan stated.
"I have to go to class. I wish I didn't have to leave, but-"
"Rachel wouldn't want you to miss class because of her. Go."
He was right. Still, I couldn't move.
Abby's footsteps tapped across the house. I heard the front door shut. Keys turned. Silence.
"Please," Dan insisted, "Come to the door. Lean on it. Sit against it. I don't care. Just listen to what I have to say. You don't have to agree with it. You don't have to do what I want you to or say what I want you to. Please." His voice was gentle and sincere.
I tried to move my feet forward. Just listening to his voice made something in me hurt. I forced myself to. My legs trembled as I slid myself down to the floor against the wall. I just wanted to stop shaking.
I felt the door push against me. I knew Dan was probably sitting on the other side of the door, his back probably against mine through this barrier.
"I'm sorry," he started. There was a pause. His voice was sincere, hurt even. Still, I couldn't speak.
"We started dating and there's been problem after problem. And I didn't trust you."
I started breathing rapidly. I balled my fists and felt my nails dig into my palms.
"I thought you were done with me. I thought that when you were fine and here and doing well you didn't need me. I was wrong. I was so wrong. I don't know how I felt so bad about you. You're an amazing person. You've cared for me so much."
