*Rachel POV*

"I wish I didn't have to go," Dan stood at the door.

I smiled, and then put his hand in mine, "It's fine. It's not like I'm never going to see you again."

Dan rolled his eyes, "Yeah. I know I'm being dramatic. It's just things are finally okay between us, and I'm pretty excited about it."

"I understand," I nodded, dropping his hand.

He reached his arms around me in a hug. I felt warmness. It felt like cookies coming out of the oven, or when you see a child smile. We separated.

"Goodbye," I spoke first. My stomach suddenly dropped. I hated goodbyes. Dan wasn't being dramatic.

"See you," he said. See you, I thought, is much better than goodbye.

Dan twisted the doorknob. He didn't push forward. "Huh?"

"Having some trouble open doors today?" I said sarcastically.

"No, it's-" he said.

He let go of the doorknob and the door was pulled outward. Abby stood at the other end of the doorknob.

She looked up and flinched, "Oh hey. Didn't see you there."

Dan laughed, "Hello. Sorry for that struggle there."

"Battle of the centuries," I added.

Abby walked inside and put her things on the table. Dan waved a final goodbye and shut the door behind him.

"So you're out of the bathroom now?" Abby asked.

I felt a strange sadness. She wasn't trying to make me feel bad, but I had a good way of doing it anyway.

"Yeah," I responded awkwardly, not knowing what else to say.

"But hey, I need to talk to you." Most anxiety provoking words of the century.

"What?" I said quietly and nervously beyond my control.

She turned around and tapped her foot forward with a little skip, and began walking toward the couch. I followed behind her meekly.

She sat down and patted the place next to her. I say where she had directed.

"Well," she said, "I'm sorry, dude. I know I've been pretty crazy-"

"Well, yeah, a little. But I didn't react much better," I interrupted. I didn't want her to continue saying things as she did. It was neither of our faults.

"Let me explain though," she looked at me dead in the eye.

I nodded obediently.

"Your mom did this really great thing allowing for me to go to school here, really. But I'm not sure it's the right place for me. I keep trying to convince myself that it'll work. But it's not California."

I felt my skin become instantly cold. How could I not have thought of that? I did ask her if she wanted to come, and she said yes, but how stupid am I?

...

*Abby POV*

Why isn't she responding? Oh my god. Did I say something offensive?

"I'm sorry," she responded. "I was stupid to think you would like it as much as I do."

"No!" I shouted almost instantly. "You're not stupid! You just wanted to share something great with me. I just haven't been much fun to be with."
