*Rachel POV*
I clasped my hands together and knotted my fingers together. My breath puffed in front of me. I heard a whistle from behind me, but the tracks in front of me remained silent.
I pulled out my phone and checked the time. It must be delayed.
I stared in front of me into the frost for a few seconds.
"Thank you for coming with me," I turned my body slightly, feeling my chin slide against my puffy scarf.
"Of course!" Phil said, positive as ever. He smiled, and then looked down at his phone, his expression turning neutral. He lit up its screen.
I looked in front of me. "Are trains usually delayed this late?"
"No."
"But it's not too out of the ordinary, right? Like nothing particularly bad happened?"
"No."
Just then white smoke breathed into the air, fading abruptly only to be caught up with more chasing afterwards. Cars sped by quickly, shaded figures visible inside. I stood up immediately. I noticed Phil looked at me, and then stood up himself.
I attempted to study the cars as they were beginning to slow. Figures on the inside stood and held onto ropes above them for security. A squeak. A stop. The train doors hissed.
People immediately began piling into a line out of the train. A lady squinted her eyes as if not used to the morning light. Another child curled slightly at the cold. I couldn't see Dan.
"There he is!" Phil shouted.
I tried to follow his gaze. I met it at the abnormally tall brunette that was my boyfriend.
Phil stepped forward and I followed, squeezing through forming crowds. We waited at some distance from the train in order to not prevent anyone from exiting.
Dan walked forward to the front of the group, and moved his shifting eyes away from the situation toward me.
I noticed a sort of panic in his eyes. I felt myself react. Then he smiled slightly.
Phil was first to hug his friend. He hugged him with the sort of unusual "man-hug" where he didn't include a bunch of slaps to the back but stayed the warm self that he was. Dan pulled away, smiling quickly and then looking blank faced and concentrated. He hugged me briefly and then stepped back. His smile left quicker than it came. I tried to study him.
"Welcome home, Dan," Phil said.
"Thanks, Phil."
...
Phil drove. Driving in London was always scary no matter who was doing it. But Phil was a good driver. I trusted him.
"I missed you," I whispered shyly into Dan's ear.
He crooked his neck down toward me. A smile smile tugged its way onto his face, a simple forming. "I missed you too."
I felt warmth spread through me, and I felt myself immediately reach out and grab his hand. I intertwined his fingers with mine.
His hands were unusually warm and covered in a thin layer of sweat. I looked down to our hands and up again. "Dan."
"What?" He continued to face forward, glancing at me quickly from the corner of his eye.
