Charlie shook his head and asked: "Why I should stay here a few weeks? You can call the US police to send him to Iran."
A smile came to Mr. Rasoli's lips because of Charlie's silly word. He said: "I think you know we don't have any diplomatic or other kind of relationship with the US government. As you told us, Christopher Artimani is your only witness. So pray he isn't there for long time, because if he is we can't do anything about it. If he was a criminal we could have him returned him to the country with the cooperation of Interpol, but he is just witness according to your story."
Disappointment came to Charlie's face. Christopher, his only hope, had gone to the US. But he couldn't understand why now and in this situation he had gone there. For a second he heard a voice from the back of his brain that gave him the answer. For treatment! Yes! Previously he had heard from Christopher that he had gone to the US three years ago with his grandfather for treatment.
He said this to Mr. Rasoli: "I think he went to the US for medical treatment. At least three years ago it was the same...I mean, he went there three years ago for treatment. I think..."
Charlie was only half finished speaking when the interrogation room door opened. Both of them stared at the tall man who was standing in the doorway. The man was wearing a gray overcoat and a black suit under it. He had a brown leather briefcase in his right hand and some papers in his left hand. His face was full of apparent calm. He was clean-shaven, but his black and white hairs given him special grandeur. Another thing that distinguished him was his blue and silver tie.
Mr. Rasoli stood up from the chair in a flash. Charlie felt Mr. Rasoli's anger at this unplanned presence. Before Mr. Rasoli could say his objection, the man took a step into the center of the room and said: "Ah, I'm sorry. I know you were in an interrogation but this interrogation is inadmissible without me!"
Mr. Rasoli cautiously asked: "I'm sorry, but who are you?"
"Godarzi. Angel Godarzi. The lawyer of Mr. Arman... from now."
He extended the paper that was in his left hand to Mr. Rasoli, who took the paper, looked at it cursorily and then said, "Yes, I think you have the right to be here."
Angel Godarzi gave a smile and then said: "Thank you, Major. As you know, my duty is defending my client, but..."
Mr. Rasoli interrupted him and said: "But what, counselor?"
Angel Godarzi smiled again and said, "Well, let me say it directly, I must speak with my client alone. You already know how important this kind of conversation is."
His tone made it clear that his last sentences were backed with legal threats. But Mr. Rasoli was smarter than to fall into the trap of this experienced lawyer.
He warmly said: "Of course, counselor! Your request is completely reasonable and legitimate!"
He smiled, and they shared a look like they were getting ready to starting a marathon!
Mr. Rasoli walked to the door but Angel Godarzi said to him before he could get out from the door: "Major, I don't need to remind you that when we talk the camera and microphone should be off."
Major Rasoli gave a not-so-friendly look to Mr. Godarzi, then as he tried to keep his composure said: "The police follow the rules, counselor."
Mr. Godarzi smiled again and said: "I don't doubt it, but I'm a doubting person, Major. Human nature doesn't change. Anyway, I brought one of my close friends with your cooperation just to be secure."
Major Rasoli's red face showed his anger clearly. Maybe he regarded this as an insult, but just like last time with self-bearing he said: "I hope you take maximum advantage of your five minutes' time."
And without waiting for any answer from Angel Godarzi he left the room and disappeared from view. After the Major exited, the door was still open and they didn't close it, but when Mr. Godarzi ensured he wasn't in hearing distance, he put his briefcase on the table and said: "Hello, Charlie."
