14. Summer

"Shanice, you remember your cousin Natalie?"
"Yes what about her?"
"She's getting married next month and wondering if you can walk in her wedding" My mom asked.
"Ooo yes I would love too"
"Great. I'll let her know but remember she lives 2 hours away so you'll have to spend half the summer up there and miss a couple weeks of band camp"
"Ok I guess that's ok" I replied.

This going to be an interesting summer I don't travel much so going somewhere other than home should be fun. Natalie and her siblings have always been the life of the party, one of them is my god sister and her brothers always have me laughing and smiling.

Aww is my sissy leaving me alone for the summer? Jhanae asked with a big ass smirk on her face.
"Yes girl so you don't have to feel like I'm cockblocking you" I stated with so much sarcasm
"Shut up" she rolled her eyes and went to cook something to eat. "So what's the plan today?"
"Idk but can you make me a sandwich" I was looking at her with an innocent look
"You know you look more like a jit when you do that I would've never thought you were 17"
I flicked her the finger and she busted laughing
"Ok I'm going to work you guys love you" mom said rushing in the kitchen kissing us both
"Love you too"

Jhanae waited till mom fully closed the door to begin talking "so it's the summer you're clearing it real soon, band camp is going to start next week, and oh wait it's the last summer before your best friend goes off to college"
"Oh my, don't remind me"
"How do you feel about him leaving?"
"The same way I felt the last few weeks of school when lunch was boring as fuck with nobody to argue and mess around with"

"I have a serious question though" she handed me my plate with my sandwich before sitting down."

"Are you planning to fuck him before he leaves?"

"Idk I really want to but-"

"But what"

"I've been talking to Jason and we're getting a lot closer so I don't wanna start messing around"

"But yall not going out yet"

"I know"

"Think of it like this Shanice, you really want the D and he really wants the P so go for it before you and Jay get serious"

"You're right"

"Besides everybody already think yall did it anyway"

"I know we joke about a lot and people are just that gullible"

"Gullible? No that's not called gullible yall have a connection and bond that everybody sees I don't care how much you claim you don't like him, you do. So when yall joke about going out or that yall fucked already yall really don't make it hard for us to believe it."

"You have a point, I mean we do have a connection and bond like no other but still I believe it's just a best friend thing"

"With benefits" she smirked and left the kitchen.

First week of band camp started and it was honestly boring I was mainly in the uniform room sorting things out for the school year, other than that I was in practice or outside in the hot sun working out.

I lowkey like band camp because it's a way of staying in the house all summer and eating the whole fridge.

I'm suppose to be going to Natalie's house this weekend and staying up there for two weeks. I'm coming back the last week of camp to get my hair and nails done for the wedding and going back up there shortly after for the actual wedding.

My summer is basically booked and I don't mind I like being busy.

"Shanice wake up and get ready, I hope you finished packing"

"Yes ma'am Im done I'll be ready in a few"

"Ok" mom shouted through the hall
I got up and went to the bathroom to do my morning hygiene. When I got back to my room Jhanae was on my bed staring at the ceiling.

"You straight?" I asked

"Yup just wanted to bother you one good time before you clear it on me"

"2 weeks I'm pretty sure you and Georgy going to have a fucking blast while mom at work. But nigga I swear if you do any shit in my room I'm going to hurt you sooo bad"

"Girl me and that nigga not even on that anymore"

I was shocked as fuck "yall broke up?"

"Yes we had too many problems it's about time, I'm single now and couldn't be any happier"

"That's great."
I finished putting my clothes on while Jhanae sat there and rambled on about her and George's break up. When I was done I grabbed my bag and Jhanae looked at me with puppy dog eyes.

"Aww I'm going to miss you" she quickly gave me a tight hug and I patted her back awkwardly
"Why you always got to make shit awkward Shanice"

"You getting too comfy and lovey for my liking but I'll only be gone for 2 weeks relax sis" I winked at her and walked out my room as my mom was waiting for me downstairs.

"You ready? Do you have everything, clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc."

"Yes ma'am"

"Let's go."

My mom was going drive me up there and come back home to go to work

Week later...

I've been up here rehearsing for the wedding and chilling with my cousins. Jhanae text me everyday but I be too busy to respond sometimes. I get a text from somebody in my section everyday to keep me posted on what's going on at band camp.

This summer heat is crazy and these people only turn the a/c on during the night but I'm not complaining that much. They have a pool that me and my cousins decide to go in everyday after a good rehearsal for the wedding.

I honestly miss home but at the same time I wouldn't really be doing anything productive other than camp, so me being here is better.
