note: hello! this is a little one shot about john b finally getting sarah her dog (on her bday), after an antagonizing 4ish years of waiting! this turned out wayyy longer than i had originally thought it would be but i hope y'all enjoy sarah's surprise party ;)
It was Sarah's twentieth birthday. A day John B had been preparing for, for weeks. She was five months pregnant, and while she wouldn't be able to drink to celebrate this birthday, John B was determined to make it special for her. He had recruited Kie to plan her surprise party with him, and they were wrapping up some last minute details to finish off the day. He knew he would not have been able to pull off everything that came with planning a surprise party alone, so Kie handled invitations, decor, and bringing John B's cake designs to life. They had a fairly big invite list, inviting close to the entire island, aside from the usual Kooks that caused a variety of issues for them. Sarah, still upstairs fast asleep in their room had no clue of the festivities that the day would hold. John B was downstairs, talking to Kie and ensuring everything had been set up at her parent's house for the day. "Yes John B, it's completely decorated. I just finished up her cake with the pink writing. I have to call a few people to confirm their attendance, but I think close to one hundred people are coming. Did you pick up the dog?" Kie asked him, honestly just as stressed for the day as he was. "No, I think I'm gonna sneak out for a bit. Sarah won't be up for at least an hour or so." He told her, nodding to himself as he mentally checked off everything they had to do for Sarah's special day. After all, it was eight am on a Saturday, and Sarah was never one to jump out of bed on her birthday at the crack of dawn. 'My birthday will wait for me,' she always said, never wanting to let any sleep pass her by. "Okay, can you stop by the house on your way out?" Kie asked him, wanting him to see her hard work and make sure everything met his standards before he came with Sarah that evening. "Yep, I'm just gonna make some coffee and I'll be over! Thanks Kie!" He said, hanging up the phone and getting his coffee going. Grabbing a pen and a piece of paper, he wrote Sarah a note for when she woke up.
'Hey Birthday Girl!
You are finally 20! I can't wait to see your beautiful face when I get home, I am out running an errand but I'll be back in no time!
I love you,
JB'
Satisfied with his note, he left as quietly as he could, hoping she would stay asleep for most of the time he was gone. Locking the door behind him, he walked out to the Twinkie, twirling the keys around his finger. He was so excited, he was picking up her birthday present: a puppy! and he could not wait to see her face at the surprise party tonight. Celebrating Sarah was something he did everyday, but today was her day. He felt like he was walking on sunshine and couldn't wait for her reaction to it all. Driving five minutes to the Carrera house, John B hoped out of the Twinkie and quickly made his way to the front door. After two quick knocks, Kie was there, opening the door and ushering him in. "Hey JB." She smiled, closing the door behind him. "Hi Kie-wow." He paused, his jaw dropping as he saw all of their planning come together in the way that it had right now. "You like it?" She asked, looking around at the light blue balloon arches, paired with seashell balloons, the table, perfectly set up with a blue table runner, sea stars and shells displayed around the plates, the 'Happy 20th Birthday Sarah' banner that wasn't tacky, but perfectly fitting. It looked stunning. "It looks amazing, Sarah's gonna cry." John B told her, unable to look away from the room in complete shock. "I had one more idea..." He started, but Kie cut him off with a glare. "What now, I don't have anymore time to pull shit out of my ass with a half-baked idea." She shook her head, letting him continue. "No, I just thought it could be cool to give a lei to everyone who comes, so no matter what they are wearing, they would fit the theme. I picked them up yesterday, downtown. I got two hundred, so I'm hoping that's enough." John B told her, proud of himself for handling a big part of the party. "I'll give it to you, that's cute." Kie smiled, nodding in approval. "Here lemme go get them out of the Twinkie." John B said, walking out the front door, letting it shut behind him. Kie followed to help him carry in the boxes. "How did you keep this one hidden from her?" She asked, seeing them fairly exposed in the hatchback of the Twinkie. "I picked them up yesterday when we were downtown. She was trying on a dress, and I ran to the flower shop next door." John B nodded, handing Kie one of the boxes. "Then, I just kept them in here. We didn't go anywhere else in the Twinkie together." He recalled, grabbing the second box as he shut the trunk. As they made their way back inside, John B remembered he had wanted to see Sarah's cake. "Oh wait, can I see her cake?" John B asked, looking toward the kitchen. "It's so Sarah, I love how your design idea came through." Kie told him as they walked over to the fridge, and she pulled out Sarah's cake. It had hot pink writing that read, "Happy Birthday Sarah," pastel colored sprinkles surrounding the top, and dollops of pink frosting for both borders. "Awe, it's so cute. She's gonna love it. Good job Kie." John B smiled, getting excited for Sarah's reaction to all of this.
