"I don't know. Don't you think this is a bad idea?" You study the official badge resting in your hand, the one that labels you an officer of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A big title that couldn't be further from the truth. And yet here you are, standing in a city in Wisconsin, chasing a string of robberies, mostly high-end jewelry stores and banks, all tied together by an unusual pattern. Every suspect involved ends up dead shortly after being reported to the police. The reports say there's no foul play, but there are enough signs to tell you this might be your kind of gig. Still, something about the role you're playing makes your stomach knot. Your track record for impersonating law enforcement isn't exactly stellar.

"Hey, if you want to sit this—"

"Who said I was chickening out?" You cut Dean off with a slight frown, already recognizing his usual tactic. Whenever you or Sam hesitate, he does this. Makes you feel like a kid. "Of course I'm going. Give me five minutes."

You jam your hands into your jacket pockets and peer down at the glass display of accessories glittering under harsh fluorescent lights. The latest robbery took place here, in a high-end jewelry store downtown. One of the top employees apparently snuck in during the middle of the night and took only the most expensive pieces. Figures. The owner is in the back, collecting everything the police recovered so you and Sam can examine it after the interview.

You catch another reflection in the glass and glance up, already knowing what you're going to see...Dean chatting up a young, female employee on the other side of the store. A scoff threatens to rise up your throat, but the glance Sam gives you keeps your lips firmly sealed. You'll deal with him later. You refocus just in time to see the store owner reappear, arms full with a display tray of stolen jewelry. Your eyes widen at the size of the stones. As he walks past you to the other side of the counter, the diamonds sparkle under the light, casting little flares that make it hard not to stare. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, right? And judging from how the owner talks about the woman responsible, she took that phrase to heart.

"Helena was our best seller. She was family, you know? She said it herself every year at the Christmas party," the owner explains, still clearly stunned by the betrayal. "She said we were the only family she had."

"So there were never any signs that she'd do something like this?" Sam asks, calm and focused.

"No... still can't believe it, even now." The man sighs. He walks you both through what happened in his own words. "That night, Helena came back to the store after closing, cleaned out all the display cases and the safe. Edgar, our night watchman, he caught her in the act. He didn't know what to do. He'd known her for years. He called me at home."

"And that's when she took his gun?" you ask, needing to confirm the grim detail from the report.

"She shot him in the face," the man says bluntly. The air seems to still around you. He closes his eyes briefly, the memory clearly haunting him. "I heard him die over the phone."

"Any idea what her motive could have been?" you press, hoping for anything that might explain this sudden descent into violence. But the man just shakes his head, puzzled.

"What motive? It makes no sense. Why steal all those diamonds, all that jewelry, and then, what, just dump it somewhere? Just hide it and then go home?"

The story only gets stranger from there. After committing the robbery and murder, Helena returned to her apartment, drew herself a nice, hot bath... and then dropped in a hair dryer, electrocuting herself.

"So you never saw the security footage yourself, then," Sam says, rubbing the back of his neck before resting his hand on the display case.

You shift in place when Dean returns to you. He gives you a sheepish grin, as if he wasn't just flirting with someone just feet from you. You elbow him as discreetly as possible.
