"What's in L.A.?" Sam asks, watching as you shove the last of the bags into the trunk of the Impala. You step back and gesture for his brother to shut it. The three of you stand outside the Roadhouse after spending a few extra days lingering around, still slowly processing the heavy, detailed information you've learned. As always, Dean decides it's best to keep busy, and it seems he's found something of interest for the three of you to work on in the meantime.
"A young girl's been kidnapped by an evil cult," Dean explains, heading over to the driver's side. You and Sam follow, moving toward your usual spots in the car.
"Yeah?" you ask, curiosity sparking. This isn't the typical kind of case you deal with, but satanists always have something up their sleeves to cause chaos. "Does the girl have a name?"
Dean digs into his jean pockets, pulls out the keys, and tells you the name. Your expression drops into an annoyed glare. You already know what he's hinting at.
"Katie Holmes," he says.
You force out a chuckle. "That's funny," you say, flashing him a smile.
"And for you, so bitchy," Dean fires back with a grin. He opens his mouth to add something else, but a yell from the distance cuts him off. It only takes a second to recognize Jo's voice, shouting at her mother about something—again, it's about hunting.
"I'm going!"
"Over my dead body!"
"You're flipping out over nothing!"
Dean pauses at the front door of the bar and glances back at you and Sam. A frown pulls at your lips as you listen to the Harvelle women going at it again.
"Catfight," Dean mutters.
You and the brothers start toward the bar entrance, wondering what's got them riled up so early. You ease the door open as quietly as possible. Inside, Jo and Ellen stand across the room from each other, their voices raised, chairs knocked out of place. Definitely not the best way to start the morning, especially right before opening.
The air is thick with tension. Jo stands with her hands on her hips, defiant. Ellen doesn't budge from protective mom mode, pacing angrily around the room. You haven't known Ellen long, but it's already clear she's a lot like your mother...not the kind to let her daughter do whatever she wants.
You're not quite like Jo, though. She confessed the other night that she wants to be a hunter, and apparently she finally told her mother. Ellen's reaction is exactly what Jo feared. And exactly what you expected.
"Are you gonna chain me up in the basement?" you hear Jo ask, peeking your head out from the side of the door. The women are still in the middle of a heated debate, too caught up to notice the three of you approaching to see what all the commotion is about.
"You've had worse ideas than that recently," Ellen snaps, roughly shoving a chair off the top of the table so she can squeeze past her daughter, who's riding her tail like a little puppy, demanding attention. Ellen grabs a barstool and slams it down onto the floor. "You don't want to stay? Don't—go back to school!"
"I don't belong there!" Jo yells. "I was a freak with a knife collection!"
"Getting yourself killed on some dusty back road...that's where you belong?" Ellen shoots back, hands braced on the table she's working on.
Jo falls silent, and you feel her gaze land on the three of you. A second later, Ellen notices too, and you can practically feel the laser focus of her stare boring straight into your forehead.
"Guys, bad time," she hisses.
"Yes, ma'am," Sam says, raising his hands slightly with a small smile.
"We rarely drink before ten anyway," Dean tries to joke, but you quickly tug on his sleeve and pull him toward the front door. You know if you don't get out of here soon, Ellen's going to start in on a lecture about privacy. One thing you definitely don't miss about having a mother: the constant fighting that never seemed to end well. Somehow, your mom always managed to make you lose the argument and do what she wanted anyway.
