It starts as an innocent conversation with Sam back at the motel. You just want to know more about the demon he's apparently been talking to, the one named Ruby. She's shown more of a soul than you ever expected, and she's promised both of you information, a way out of Dean's crossroads deal, among other things you're not quite ready to say out loud. Sam seems eager to believe her. You're not there yet. You understand why he wants to, desperation does strange things to people, but every demon you've ever met has been cruel, manipulative, or deadly. You doubt Ruby is any different.
You'd wanted to keep the discussion between the two of you, but Sam had other plans. A few miles down the road, he brings it up. And just like you predicted, it turns into a fight, words thrown like knives across the front seat, leaving you stuck in the middle. Still, as the argument goes on, you find yourself slowly sliding to Sam's side. His points make more sense than Dean's stubborn refusals.
"Ruby's had plenty of chances to kill us, but she didn't. Maybe she's actually trying to help us, Dean." you argue, leaning forward until your chest is nearly pressed against the back of the seat. You're trying to break through to him, but Dean keeps his eyes on the dark road ahead, jaw set, shaking his head at your "naive" attempts. "Why can't you get that through your thick skull?"
"Because she's a demon. That's why." Dean's voice is sharp and steady, the same lecture you've been getting for the last fifteen minutes. You roll your eyes and glance out the window, watching tree shadows flicker past. "The second you two find out she's a demon, you're supposed to go for the holy water. Not sit down and chat."
Sam lets out a scoff at the accusation. "No one was chatting, Dean," he mutters, his patience thinning.
"Oh, yeah?" Dean cuts him a sideways glare. "Then why didn't you send her back to Hell?"
"Because," Sam snaps, before reining himself back in. "Because she said she might be able to help us."
"How?" Dean demands. His eyes flick up to the rearview mirror, waiting. You and Sam exchange a glance, unsure how much you're willing to reveal. But your silence just fuels his frustration. "Come on. How could she possibly help us?"
Your fingernails dig into your palms, trying to hold yourself back. You expect Sam to break first, but it's you who snaps. "She said she could help you, okay?" The words rip out of you before you can stop them. The car goes silent. Sam shoots you a wary glance, and Dean's knuckles go white on the steering wheel. "Help you out of the deal."
Dean's eyes meet yours in the mirror, his expression somewhere between disbelief and disdain. You can practically hear the lecture forming before he even opens his mouth. "What's wrong with you two? She's lying. She knows exactly what your weakness is. It's me." His voice is quieter now, but it hits harder. He's not wrong, and you both know it. You cross your arms and sink back into your seat, refusing to give him the satisfaction of admitting it. "What else did she say?" When neither of you answers, his tone hardens. "Guys?"
"Nothing," Sam mutters under his breath.
You feel Dean's gaze on you again, sharp and suspicious. You scoff, losing your grip on your temper. "Nothing, okay? Look, we're not idiots. I'm not saying we trust her. I'm saying we use her."
Dean lets out a humorless laugh. "Wow. I never thought someone like you would stoop that low." The sarcasm stings. It's meant to. You bite back a sharp breath, swallowing the urge to lash out. "You two do whatever you want. I still don't trust this chick."
"We're at war, Dean," Sam says firmly. "And we don't know anything. We don't know where the demons are, what they're doing, what they want. But Ruby does. She knows more than we could ever find out on our own. Yeah, it's risky. I know that. But we need to take it."
