You weave through the alleyway with the only real source of light coming from the occasional streetlamp overhead and the flashlight secured tightly in your hand. The other grips a freshly sharpened machete resting against your thigh while you wait for something to catch your eye. A string of bodies drained completely of blood is more than enough evidence to point toward a vampire nest, even if you and the boys haven't dealt with many of them before. The sloppy trail left behind makes one thing painfully obvious: either these vampires don't care about getting caught, or they're growing bold enough to stop hiding altogether. And now that the sun has gone down, it's officially feeding time.
Most of the victims have turned up around this area. Secluded enough for a vampire to drag someone off and enjoy a midnight snack without interruption, at least until you and the Winchesters show up to ruin the fun. You move deeper into the alley with the brothers slightly ahead of you, all three of you scanning the place carefully for any clue that might've been missed. But the longer the silence stretches on, the more you begin wondering if you're already too late. News about the attacks has started spreading through town, and while most people are brushing them off as animal maulings, it still might've been enough to scare the nest into moving somewhere safer.
Then you spot it.
A thick pool of blood glistens behind a dumpster several yards away.
You immediately jab your elbow into Dean's side since he's closest, and before he can complain, you lift the flashlight and point toward the stain spreading across the concrete.
All three of you move toward it quickly. Your grip tightens around the machete as you round the dumpster, already preparing yourself to find one of them crouched over a body. Instead, a man lies crumpled against the pavement with trembling hands pressed weakly against the fresh wounds in his neck. The jagged bite marks are unmistakable.
You crouch beside him immediately.
Blood bubbles thickly from his mouth every time he tries to breathe, but he's still conscious enough for his terrified eyes to dart toward the three strangers suddenly hovering over him.
"Hey, hey. Don't worry," Sam says quickly, kneeling beside you as he tries calming the man before panic makes the bleeding worse. "We're gonna get you some help, okay?"
Dean, impatient as always, is already looking beyond him.
"Where is she?" he demands.
The man barely reacts.
Dean's tone sharpens. "Where'd she go?"
With the last bit of strength he can manage, the victim shakily lifts a hand and points farther down the alley toward a narrow opening splitting between two buildings. You raise the flashlight enough to catch sight of the path branching off in opposite directions.
Your eyes flick immediately toward Dean.
You nod once toward the left path.
Dean doesn't hesitate. He pushes to his feet and disappears down one direction while you head down the other alone, flashlight beam bouncing against cracked pavement and graffiti-covered walls. Your footsteps echo softly around you as you move farther away from the sounds of the street. Every shadow suddenly feels too dark. Every corner feels too quiet.
You turn down another narrow stretch before finally stepping into a wider opening boxed in by chain-link fencing.
Dead end.
Your eyes sweep over the area carefully. There aren't many places to hide, but enough darkness clings to the edges that someone could still be lurking nearby watching you.
