"I saw him with that group..."

When I think of it, the scene was a blur, the sounds of gunfire and distant screaming only adding to the muffled reminiscences. The attack on Alexandria was the day I learned that the Whisperers weren't as they seemed.
Many of us were excited to finally earn the chance of controlling a herd. The idea of having both the people I considered my family members, Carley and Omid, beside me added the patriotism I felt before the raid that night.
I could recall how the younger members of Alexandria were too much in shock to really get a good look on the herd to determine who was a walker and who was a human. As we approached the town, walkers stumbled along the streets, mauling at every individual who dared not to move. My real assessment was not to kill, but to scavenge as many supplies as I could.
Though, soon, I would realize that was nearly impossible.
Moving from one building to another, I found myself more and more unnerved. Inside each building, my group found younger children huddling in fear, trying to hide from our onslaught. Now as I think of it, those kids weren't any different than I was, but at the time, I merely followed orders.
But the sight of James killing an innocent member of ours for expressing sympathy was physically mangling me. If I hesitated, I would meet the same fate. My heart was already hardened into a killing machine and that sight was enough to gradually thaw it down... but not all the way.
There was, still, this one specific moment I could never forget.
We barged into a room to find terrified kids cowering in corners, desperate to stay out of sight— though, we always found them.
I could remember Theo forcing the younger parts of our group into guarding the door, making sure no one came in or out, while the rest of us moved in to take care of the enemy. I took out my knife and the room, that seemed to be full of screams, slowly faded into nothing but an eerie silence.
I've killed many times before, down to when I was eight; but for some, strange reason, this was a real eye opener. Maybe it was the fact they were kids, or maybe it was the fact that I had no true reason to kill them. Whatever it was, I buried it deep into my soul.
Picking up the final supplies that were laying out in the nursery, I managed to find nothing but toys, many covered in the bloody mess we made. This is what I killed for, toys.
"Those kids— No, those people are like us, just on a different path."
From then on, I couldn't stop my hands from trembling. And I vowed to never kill someone with my own hands. Not anymore.

I snap out of the memory when the first gates of the place closes, creating a loud clash, and I squeeze my quivering hands into fists. I'm fine after taking a deep breath.
Suddenly, Clem is standing in front of me, her face etched with disturbance and unease. "We need to talk."
"What is it?"
"What is it?" she repeats, her voice lingering with utter disbelief. "What was that back there? You looked... scary."
Scary. Is that what I am now?
