"I'm a kid."

1st Person | Present

I graze my knife across the last walker's throat, watching as it collapses into an odd ball. I take a deep breath, thankful for the cold weather for now as I could see the vapor of my breath— it was way too hot during the summer. Maybe I should thank Hera and Alpha for teaching me new tricks; it's not difficult to sneak up on a horde if you really think about it.

I've been wandering south for a month at most. James offered to split up, saying I was too loathing towards him. In all honesty, I hope he's still alive. Being the weirdo he always is, I have no doubt he's blending with a crowd of walkers to get from one place to another.

I vowed not to use those bizarre tactics as it always left a bitter lump in my throat. And I still haven't forgiven myself for abandoning Carley and Omid either without letting them know about my escape. It's for the best, I keep thinking.

I shouldn't worry, it's not like I'll ever see them again.

I just want Clementine, Duck, Kenny, Christa, and AJ. My family. But I try not to mention Kenny and Christa, it's hard to think they still stuck together. I just can't imagine it. Lee wasn't able to stick with us for an entire year, so I refuse to believe Kenny and Christa stuck with the kids for two and a half years straight.

Maybe something's wrong with me.

"Is it clear?" Javi's voice asks from behind, making me give him a glance.

Javier, his family and I bumped ways last month. They're actually very good people— Mariana, his niece, the only girl around my age, just three years younger than me. Kate is his sister-in-law and I think they're starting to prove otherwise, but I'm not really going to get into that. Javi is a jokester, even in the midst of all the drama, and I'm glad for it. Meanwhile his older nephew, Gabe, just a year older than me... he's a whole other story. I never want to be around a dude going through puberty, they're just a bomb ready to explode every single minute of the day before resetting just to do it all over again.

"Yeah," I finally answer, wiping the extra blood on the fabric of my sweater to clean my knife. "There was only two, but I'm sure the herd is going to catch up to our campfire."

"Well, shit," he mutters before Kate suddenly appears to his side, handing him binoculars to peer over the edge of the cliffs from where we stood.

"Everything alright?" she asks, trying to squint her eyes ahead to guess how fast the herd was advancing.

I could only give her a quick thumbs up for reassurance before Javi curses under his breath. "Damn... I left my water bottle. And the herd just got there."

"That took... what? 4 hours?" I ask.

"A bit under," Kate confirms, taking one glance at her still-working watch before walking away back into the woods where the van was parked. "C'mon. We should keep moving while the kids are asleep."

"I'm a kid."

"The other kids."

"Right." Javi sighs.

I'll never tell them who I really was back in Virginia.

"Looks like the herd is speeding up a little. I thought it was drifting southwest," Kate explains as Javi drove the van. "but I'm not sure anymore."

"Herd are random," I say, staring aimlessly at the blurry images of forest trees out the window. "They follow each other, so they can change directions, not on purpose, of course, it's likely because one of the leaders was too slow."

"Sometimes you scare me with your words," Javi admits, clearly shivering at my thoughts.

"You're not the first." The first was Larry, of course I had to remember that ancient, heart crisis.

"But back to the issue," Kate presses, her eyes softening in worry as she taps her right leg unconsciously. "We should keep moving, right?"

"It's worked for us so far," Javi responds, his eyes focusing on the road ahead. "As long as we stay supplied. We're fine."

"Maybe you're right."

Javi shrugged. "The van isn't so bad. We'll figure it out."

"You always do," I reassure.

The rest of the trip down the empty roads are silent before Kate begins to dig in the glove compartment of the van, her eyes sparking in some sort of mischief. "Hey... I'm gonna sneak a smoke."

I watch as Javi tried his best to hold back his laughter before shaking his head at Kate's behavior. "I can't believe you got a hold of weed."

"Are you kidding?" Kate scoffed. "People were probably growing this before they realized they needed food."

I glance away from the window and let out a soft yawn before joining in the strange conversation, yet again, I was used to it. "The old group I used to be with had a really trippy guy who had a whole landscape of this stuff, it would've been a fortune if the world didn't die out."

"You should've stole some."

I laugh. "If I had known I would've met you guys, I would've stole plenty."

Kate practically groaned in frustration at the loss of opportunity before she began to roll the plant. "One day, one day I'll find more."

"I don't doubt you," Javi responded heartily.

At this point, I really don't know when I'll be finishing this season at all— but I know I will. Although I'm very slow with writing, I get my work done eventually and I hope I get this whole book done by the summer.

Anyways, thank you all for being patient. I just got out of work and school, it was nonstop 15 hours of either working or doing school work. This routine has been going on for weeks and I'm just exhausted.

Good thing is that I don't work tomorrow, so I'm hoping I can (and most definitely will) post a second chapter. (I promise it'll be the reunion of the two gays).

I love you all, don't forget it. ❤️
