The room was large and quiet, filled with people of importance.
High-ranking looking officials of the Holy Sanctium Empire sat alongside members of the royal family. Leo and co., were present with me, all taking their places around the long amber? Or perhaps cypress table.
I sat there in silence for a moment, looking at the strange-looking microphone set before me.
It was large, with a heavy metal base and an odd grille on top, looking like something from antiquated era. I leaned closer and “1,2, ahem, mic check,” spoke into it, wondering if I should introduce myself or wait for them to start. No sound came out. I tapped the side of the microphone with my finger, but there was no response, no echo, no booming sound filling the chamber. It felt strange to sit in such a formal place and not even know if the equipment worked.
The silence broke when a woman stood up. She looked older, but her face reminded me very much of Lisa, almost like seeing her in the future. Her expression was composed, her voice clear. “Your excellency Oliver, welcome to the Holy Sanctium Empire,” she said. “I am Victoria, Queen of this nation. This is my husband, Ronald IV, Emperor of Sanctium. And here is my son, the Crown Prince Aust, and his wife Astrid, as you're acquainted already.”
Her introduction was direct, the kind that expected a polite response. I smiled at her, bowing slightly. “Yes, mother,” I said, words slipping out without much caution.
“What mother?”
“The audacity”
“Inappropriate slip up to this meeting”
That drew immediate reaction. Several people looked stunned, their eyes widening at what they considered audacious.
But I straightened my back and continued. “I am Duke of Cignus, ruler of the Federation, and current President Oliver Von Lauenburg. It is my pleasure to meet you all. You may know of my brazenness, and the rudeness of touching your daughter and granddaughter without permission. But I intend to take responsibility.”
There was a pause, eyes focused on me again. The Queen studied me with careful interest, then gave a small smile. “Oh, that is one topic we will discuss. Please, hold for now. We will get there.”
Even without using my ability, I could feel the mood around me. Hostility, distrust, suspicion—it was painted wide-open in the way they looked at me. Every glance carried weight, and though no one openly threatened me, I could tell they were not fond of my presence. Leo and his group reacted differently, glaring back at the others as though ready to defend me.
“Should we begin?” I tapped the table lightly with my fingers. “Every second matters. The situation with Yugoslavia cannot be delayed. Without our help, you had no realistic chance of defeating them.” My tone was sharp, challenging, and it sparked an immediate reaction.
“Bah, you think we need you?”
“He's a disappointment, we should really give the princesses on this man?” Officials muttered and spat hostile words, some insulting me outright, anger rising at what they saw as arrogance.
I spread my arms out wide, as if embracing their hatred. “Say what you like. I’ll take it all.” Leo gave me a look, shaking his head slightly as if to warn me not to go too far. Maybe I had let my pride run ahead of me, but I felt no true danger from these people’s emotions. So I stayed where I was, refusing to provoke further, but not retreating either.
The Queen’s voice cut through the noise. “As crude as you are, I cannot see what my daughter or granddaughter find in you. You are not someone I would ever find attractive or suitable.”
