Cold air swept over the streets. Zagreb was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that felt wrong. People were awake even though it was past midnight. Nobody slept well after the news from Belgrade.
A patrol walked down the main road. Four soldiers. Jackets zipped to the neck. Rifles hanging from their shoulders.
One rubbed his hands.
“Why is it this cold already? It’s still March.”
Another kicked a loose rock on the pavement.
“Yeah. Feels like winter is starting early. This world really has different seasons.”
Their captain glanced at them.
“Stop talking like old men. Keep your eyes open.”
One of the soldiers sighed.
“Captain… Belgrade getting nuked… you think it’ll happen here too?”
“Don’t start with that again.”
“I’m serious. Belgrade was the capital. If they wanted to make a point, Zagreb might be next.”
The captain didn’t answer right away. He looked up at the barely lit apartment buildings. Curtains moved. Someone watching. Everyone was awake.
Another soldier leaned closer to his friend and whispered.
“What if we join that… thing… you know. The secessionists.”
The friend elbowed him hard.
“Idiot. Do you want the secret police to cut your head off? Don’t say that again.”
“It’s not rebellion. They just don’t want to get nuked.”
“Shut up. You’ll get us killed.”
The captain stopped walking and turned to them.
“What were you two whispering about?”
“Nothing, sir.”
“Good. Keep it that way.”
They continued walking, boots tapping the ground. Someone shouted in the distance, but it was just a drunk man yelling at the empty street.
One of the soldiers spoke again.
“I hope the war doesn’t reach here. It’s peaceful. For now.”
“Don’t jinx it,” the captain said.
A breeze blew between the buildings. Windows rattled a little.
Then, suddenly—
Everyone froze.
A deep rumble rolled through the ground. Slow at first. Like something a rolling thunder.
The captain frowned.
“What was that? An earthquake?”
Nobody answered.
The rumble got louder.
Fast.
A man in a nearby apartment opened his window.
“Hey! What’s going on out there?!”
The captain looked down the street.
A flash lit up the sky—bright white, like a camera flash but huge. It came from far away, but not far enough.
A second later, the shockwave hit.
Every window on the block shattered at once. The sound crashed into them like a sledgehammer. The patrol hit the ground as the blast rolled past them.
