We walked along the streets of Central market. The place was bustling with people, but it wasn't crowded. Orange lights hung around and the air was cool. I stopped near an accessory shop.
There were lockets and rings hanging on the racks. They looked dazzling. I shuffled through a few of them and then my eyes fell upon a locket with a single pendant. It was a key, studded with white shining diamonds, with a single big pink diamond. It was so very pretty. I checked my purse. Money was never a problem, I'm thankful for that, ever since I had a job. I bought it and put it around my neck. For some reason, I was unable to hook it up.
I felt a warm breathe on my neck, and then the cold tips of his fingers. With his skilled fingers, he hooked up the necklace. I gulped. He adjusted my hair after that.
I turned around. "Stunning." He says looking at the pendant in my neck. We walk along the cobblestoned path.
"Do you still visit the church?" He asks.
"Yes every Thursday."
"And do you still avoid it?" I ask.
"Yes." He grins.I just shake my hand at him. Going to the church had become very common once he left. I used to pray to god for hours, wanting him back. I was still waiting for him. Like someday, I might just collide with him somewhere on the road. I never really got over the fact that he was no longer there in my life.
We saw people crowding at a particular spot on the open ground."I think the fireworks are about to start." I say.
We walk hurriedly towards that ground. I look up at the sky. The first rocket goes up and bursts in a colourful glory of pink, white and orange. I gasp.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" I ask, my eyes not once leaving the sky.
"Yes, beautiful." He says and when I turn to look at him, he's looking at me. I gently hold his chin and turn his face towards the sky. Another fireburst littered the sky."That's what I was talking about." I say.
He genuinely smiles, a smile so warm that an unexpected current passes through me. I clear my head of it's muddled thoughts and concentrate on the fireworks. It's soon over and we sit back in the car."Where is that surprise place you were gonna take me to?" He asks.
"Wait and watch." I say grinning.
"Are we going to a strip club or something?"
I roll my eyes at him. "You can surely go there."
"Who knows you might have developed some kinky pleasures?"
"Oh god no. You're the horny one here."
"Oh please Grace, we all know the truth. I heard you have lost your control nowadays."
I gasp. "Who told that to you?"
"That means that it is the truth!"
I shut my eyes. I got tricked, again. "Stop messing with my head." I say.
"Stop messing with my heart." He says.I turn to look at him. Very smartly, he has worn his shades again, hiding his eyes. We often don't say what we feel, forgetting that our eyes give away our emotions. But I can't even look at his eyes now. I drive.
Alastair
We stop near a forest. I remove my glares. I should behave myself instead of pursuing a girl who's clearly not interested. Seriously, I'm her past. I WAS her everything, I'm nothing to her now. She hops down from the car and walks towards me. Fuck, those legs."We'll have to go in." She says.
"Yeah? It's dark. Is it safe?"
"Don't be a girl now. Come on."
I raise my eyebrows at her and we head inside. It is dark, but not creepy.Crickets croak around and fallen leaves crunch under our feet. She walks ahead of me, occasionally turning back to check if I'm following her. And then we emerge out into an opening. Wow. There's a sparkling stream flowing till infinity. The stars from above light up the sand on the ground. It's perfect. She's looking at me, trying to gauge a reaction.
"Mesmerising." I say.She smiles widely, glad that I liked it. She removed her sandals and started walking towards the sea. I also took off my shoes. The sand crumbled beneath my feet. I caught up with her. She sat on the sand and so did I. Tilting my head back, I looked at the innumerable stars in the sky. Stars had always been a very important part of our relationship. We often stared at them, for no reason at all, lying on the rooftop, just talking.
"That one looks like a gun." She says pointing to a particular constellation.
"And the one next to that seems like a bullet."
"Oh yes. Perfect."
"What do you want from life Gracie?"
"Happiness. For once, I want to be completely happy. I want to laugh, without having to worry about crying the next day.""Happiness comes from within. Not from people and places. What are you waiting for?"
"No Alastair. I'm okay I guess? I don't know what happiness feels like. I smile, I laugh, and I don't even cry or complain. But somewhere, something is incomplete."
"It's the same with me. I have everything I could ask for, but there clearly is a cliché."Oh my, I'm hopelessly in love with a memory, a place from faraway.
"We are so screwed up." She sighs.
"That's why we get along." I mutter.
"Who said we get along?" She says with a mischievous grin and before I know it, she has run away.I take off and run behind her. She shrieks and goes off further. I catch her by the waist and we fall on the sand.
She turns to face me. Our faces are just inches away now. Her breathing grows ragged and I'm losing control. And then together all of a sudden, she turns her face away and I get up. Good that we both turned away at the same time. I did want to kiss her though. But you can't have something that is not supposed to be yours.Composing ourselves, we walk back to the car. The drive back is quick and steady. She drops me off in front of the office, where the chaffeur goes to get my car from the parking lot.
"I hope you had fun today." She says.
"I had more fun than I had in the last few years."
Her eyes gleam and she smiles. "I'm glad. Goodbye." With that, she disappears into the darkness.I love you.
