CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: mommie deariest

JAX NOVOA FOUND HIMSELF STARING AT HIS BOYFRIEND WITH A LOOK OF DISBELIEF. The words that had escaped Malachi's mouth had shocked him, given that Kai had made it clear what he thought about his father. Kai thought that Jake was abusive.
And, although Jake was rarely ever around, and was typically lying. He would have never hit one of his children.

"What?" Jax asked.

"It doesn't make sense to me," Kai speaks. "Your father doesn't seem like the time to allow important information lying around, where it can easily be found.  How would you mother have known about the Van Pelts?  And, most of the Van Pelts are powerless witches, so, something your father really wouldn't view as a threat, why would he care to keep tabs on them? Even if it was just to say they are witches. And, out of all of them, all the witches and wizards, your mother chose the powerless witch coven to protect her?"

"And, when he was in the witch trap, despite your mother saying how bad a person he is, he didn't say anything to defend himself. When, just a few minutes ago he sent you a text, as if it was from the council to talk to you and tell you all of this. So, why wouldn't he say something then? You know, unless he couldn't, if your mother put a spell on him to stay silent."

Jax raked a hand through his hair. Kai, as always, had a point. For a second, Jax was silent, glancing to his boyfriend. To see the unsure look in Kai's eyes. Kai had been hesitate to tell Jax, because he wasn't sure what his reaction would be like.

Jax gently took a hold of Kai's hand, intertwining his fingers into Kai's. He brought Kai's hand up, kissing the back of his hand. He smiled lightly at Kai.

"We get them in a room together and ask them both, face-to-face," Jessie tells Jason. As if her plan was brilliant.

Jason sighed. "In a room together... face to face, brilliant."

"No." Jessie deadpanned. "Gifted, yes. But, brilliant? Okay, probably."

Jason pulled his phone from his pocket, quickly selecting Kai's number. Jax would likely ignore his call to continue spending time with Kai. "Not you, me."

"Hello," Kai's voice comes through the phone.

"Okay, let's see that report card, big talker."
Jessie tells Jason.

"Get Jax and come here," Jason immediately says. "We need to come up with a plan. I know which of them is lying."

"Don't leave me hanging," Jessie immediately says.
