Surgery?

Those words raised through my head a million times as I pulled out of the Hospital parking lot and drove back home.

I sat in my car and just stared at Chris' house, my mind blank.

I then noticed a light flicker on from inside his house and I immediately ran over.

I knocked once. Twice. Three times. No reply.

"Screw this." I muttered, kicking the doormat away and grabbing a spare key underneath it.

The door creaked open. "Hello?" I whispered.

Either a robber had broken in or it was one of his siblings.

I heard sniffling from upstairs.

"Is anyone home?"

"A-are you a robber?" I heard from upstairs.

"No, are you?"

"No, I'm Scott Evans."

Chris' brother.

I raced upstairs and found a very broken man sitting at the edge of a bed.

He looked up at me in alarm.

"Hi, I'm Bella. Chris' friend."

"Hi."

"I heard Chris is getting surgery. Why?" My voice cracked.

"He's donating a kidney to my mom."

"So he woke up?" I gulped.

"Yeah." He breathed.

Relief rushed through me. He was alright.

Listen, I'm so sorry about your mom Scott."

Scott looked up at me from his place at the bed and smiled. "Thank you."

Scott and I talked for awhile, just to get to know each other and pass the painful hours as Chris and Lisa undergo surgery.

"Have you met Mandy yet?" He asked me, with doubt in his eyes.

"Yes." My say as I remember the 'fight' we had in the bathroom.

"And your thoughts are...?"

"Umm well shes..." I tried to think of something nice to say. "Um she's got eyes..."

Scott laughs. "I know, I feel the same way about her."

My eyes widen. "You do?"

"Yeah, she's not the nicest person, and I think she's only using Chris for his money and looks."

"Really?"

"Yeah, she's got Chris wrapped around her finger pretty good."

"Is he happy?" My held my breath hoping the answer was no.

"To be honest, he's thinks he is. But I know that deep down, Mandy isn't the girl for him. She only stopped by the hospital once to visit."

"Only once? HE WAS THERE FOR THREE WHOLE FREAKING YEARS." I practically yelled.

She had the dignity to call him her boyfriend but yet she didn't even visit him when he wAS IN A COMA?

"I know. My mom told me you were there everyday! Do you know where Chris was going the night of the accident?" Scott asked, leaning forward.

"No, I was at work."

"Oh, well the paramedics said that they found flowers in the car. And the nurses found a wedding ring in his coat pocket."

My heart stopped.

"My mom said she thinks he was going to go propose to Mandy." He said shaking his head.

Propose.

That word hurt.
