I wake up the next morning unhappy. Im not angry. Im not sad. Im just not happy, although I had no reason to be. I slouched as I walked through the empty house, slowly getting ready and mentally preparing for the day ahead. By the time I leave the house, Im already behind my usual schedule. About halfway to school, It begins to pour down rain and I let out a loud groan before running the rest of the way.
When I push through the large glass doors today, I look like a drowned cat. My hair is dripping, my make-up is running and my clothes are soaked. I quickly pull out my phone and text Delaney asking her to bring me some spare clothes, knowing she hasn't left yet. She usually arrives to school right as the bell is ringing, except for the first day because she likes to make a "good impression". She quickly answers and tells me she will bring me something and to just meet her at our lockers.
I sigh and quietly try to make my way to my locker and avoid making contact with anyone. I see a few people look at me out of the corner of my eye and I hear a few giggles, which makes me angry. It's not my damn fault it decided to start raining. I open my locker and try to act like I'm busy doing something, when I'm actually just trying to hide as much of my body as possible inside. About five minutes pass and I wonder where the hell Delaney is. And then I hear it. I hear the one voice I don't want to hear calling my name when I look like I just fell into a pool.
"Lea!" Harry calls again, standing behind me this time
I slowly turn around and look at him. Why couldn't he see me one morning when I was all dressed up and pretty, not when my mascara is halfway down my face? I turn back around and try and act like Im looking for something.
"Hey Harry. What's up?"
"Nothing. Are you looking for something? Do you want some help?" He offers
"No, Im just, um, seeing if I have more pencils in my bag"
Hurry up Delaney or so help me god...
"I have one you can borrow" He offers and I sigh, hanging my head a little lower
There's no point in hiding now. I grab my thing and I lock my locker. I slowly turn back around and face him.
"Woah" He says and I frown even more "Why are you so wet?"
"I had to run to school because it started pouring on my way here" I explain, looking down at my shoes
"Oh" He says and I glance up at him and I can tell he is trying not to laugh
"Go on then" I huff and cross my arms "Laugh"
"I wouldn't dare" He grins "I can drive you home quickly to grab some new clothes if you want"
My heart flutters when he offers.
"That's okay. Delaney is supposed to be brining me clothes, I just wish she would hurry up about it. Thanks though"
"Anytime" He smiles
He looks like he is about to say something else, but Delaney comes running towards our lockers and stops dead in her tracks when she sees me and breaks out in laughter. I walk over to her and hit her shoulder hard.
"You may want to invest in an umbrella" She snorts and hands me the dry clothes, which I snatch out of her hands
"I think I will" I scowl and stomp off towards the washroom.
I quickly change and tie my hair in to a quick braid before wiping off my previous make-up and applying a new coat of mascara, not bothering with any foundation. I sigh and walk back to my locker, where everyone is now waiting. I deposit the wet clothes and then lock it back up before turning to everyone.
"You alright?" Xavier asks and I shrug
I hear Delaney giggle and I scowl at the floor. Stupid rain. I stand with them for a few moments before sighing and glancing down at my phone in my hand.
"Im going to head to class early. The bell is going to ring in a few minutes anyway and I don't want to be late" I lie and wander off
I just don't want to be near anyone right now. I can't understand my own mood, but I go with it. Ill just be quiet and grumpy for the day. The rain was a sign anyway. As I'm walking I notice someone walking along with me, and when I glance up, I see it is Xavier. I roll my eyes and look down at the floor again.
"Im assuming you want to talk" I say
"Lea, I didn't mean what I said to you" He starts, looking down too "It killed me not to talk to you all summer, but It was also nice to have some alone time and just get all my thoughts together. I didn't mean to be a prick. If you don't like me in that way, I get it. I just need to go back to our regular friendship because I miss you so much"
"I miss you too" I mumble "Im sorry"
"Im sorry too. Just please talk to me again" He says and I look up to see my favourite crooked smile
"Deal" I grin "So what really happened with Elle?"
He groans and pulls me in to a side hug as we walk.
"I may or may not have hooked up with her a few times" He says and I look up at him
"You slept with Elle?!" I say a little too loud
"Shhhhh!" He shushes me and I giggle
Im about to make a remark about her, but he looks down at his watch and notices the time. He squeezes my side quickly, telling me he will see me at lunch before running down the hall. I sigh and enter my first period class, taking the same seat as I did yesterday. I wait and watch Delaney walk in the room right before the bell rings and Mrs. Kavanaugh huffs. Delaney leans over to me and I turn a little.
"Did you and Xavier work it out?"
"Yeah" I smile
"Good. The tension between the two of you was killing me" She jokes "Harry gave me hell for laughing at you earlier"
"He did?" I ask and try to hide my smile
"He was quite angry. I think he felt bad for you. I told you he liked you" Delaney grins
"Delaney, he does not like me" I roll my eyes "Just because someone tells you not to make fun of me for once in your life does not me-"
"Ladies!" Mrs. Kavanaugh says, her voice shrill "Am I interrupting your conversation?"
"No" We both mutter
"Okay, than shut it" She scolds and continues her lesson
I give Delaney a look before talking out my pencil and copying down whatever she has written on the board. After I finish, I look around and vaguely listen to what Mrs. Kavanaugh is saying. Delaney is texting under her desk and Carson Warner, a fifth year, is picking his nose. I stifle a laugh and look back down at my desk, my mood slowly beginning to lighten like the sun outside the window. After another twenty minutes the bell rings and I gather my things from my desk. I say a quick goodbye to Delaney and head to my math class, where I am greeted by a chipper Emma.
"Hey! You barley talked this morning! Are you alright?"
"Yeah it was just a rough morning" I smile as we take our seats.
I take out my notebook and start to copy the note on the board as Mr. Reek comes around and checks last nights homework. Math lasts for longer than it should and then I head to lunch, which is filled with very little conversation, seeing as both Xavier and Emma seem to be M.I.A. After lunch we all head to English, where we begin our first novel study. In gym we just pay another round of dodgeball, and this time I actually manage to hit someone with one of the balls.
In the change room after the bell rings, Elle threatens me to stay away from Harry because he is hers. I roll my eyes and try my best not to tell her that you can't just claim people as your own, but I just change quickly and head to my locker, happy to be heading home.
