Kale chuckled “Say Lilly, we were thinking that we’re going to the carnival tomorrow and were wondering if you would like to come with us?” he asked smiling, you blinked your eyes surprised “Well, I uhh…” you began. “There’s no way in hell she’s going with you!” a voice you recognized yelled.

Your head snapped in the direction that the voice had come from. Your eyes grew wider when you saw Dante standing in the entrance of the cafeteria. “Dante?” you asked confused looking at him, Dante walked over to you in a hastened speed his expression showing anger and hatred. He stopped in front of you, facing towards Kyle and Kale. “Hey Dante, how are you doing” Kale greeted with a grin, you peeked around Dante to try and see what’s going on. Dante narrowed his eyes as he looked at them “I warned the both of you to stay away from her” he reminded in a low voice, his hands balled into fists beside his sides. You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion *Why would Dante warn them to stay away from me?* you thought looking up at him.

“Oh come on Dante, don’t be like that” Kyle said smiling, “Be like what? Protect people I care about from your evil clutches? I choose to be like that” Dante retorted smirking. Kyle’s expression faltered for about a second or two then a grin spread across his face “True, I am evil but so are you or did you start to forget that because of your other side?” he asked. Dante clenched his teeth and looked down, you blinked your eyes not understanding what they are talking about. *Dante’s not evil, what is Kyle talking about…* you trailed off in thought as your eyes widened in realization *Dante is a damphir and Kyle and Kale are his cousins which means they’re also damphirs since they can also be in daylight. Vampires have always been considered evil by humans whether they really were or not and whether they were only half vampire or not* you mentally explained.

“Exactly Lilly, smart girl. And since you could figure that out it means you know Dante’s secret… as well as ours now” Kyle said smiling smugly.  You gasped *How did he… he can read minds!* you mentally realized your mouth agape. “Yes I can” Kyle agreed smirking, Dante glared at Kyle “Stay out of her mind” he warned in a deep voice but you were hardly able to hear him. Kyle chuckled “You will forever hate us, won’t you?” he asked looking at Dante, “How could I not” Dante replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Kyle sighed “It’s a shame really, I think we could have gotten along pretty well actually” he commented smirking, Dante glared at Kyle “You may have some of the same blood as me, but you mean absolutely nothing to me at all” he informed without showing the faintest bit of uncertainty. “Ouch Dante, that hurts my feelings” Kyle mocked putting his hand over his heart.

The bell rang signalling lunchtime was over. “I guess that was enough fun for today, let’s go Kale” Kyle said turning towards the cafeteria’s entrance. “Bye Lilly, see you soon” Kale said waving at you as he walked behind his brother. You waved back “Bye…” you said as you looked after them until they were completely out of sight. Many of the students were still standing and staring at you and Dante while others were making their way towards their next classrooms. Dante turned around facing you then sighed closing his eyes “Are you okay, Lilly?” he asked opening his eyes and looking into your eyes. You nodded slowly as your cheeks started to heat up, he sighed in relief “Thank goodness” he breathed then suddenly embraced you. Your eyes grew wide, not expecting this, and you were so shocked you completely forgot to hug him back.

Dante let go of you and looked at you smiling “Uhm… Dante” you began a little uncertain, “Yea?” he asked smiling. “What just happened? Why are you and your cousins on such bad terms? They’re family after all” you stated looking at him. Dante sighed deeply “Tell you what, I’m gonna pick you up after school and take you home and we can talk on the way, okay?” he suggested smiling at you, you nodded slowly “Okay” you replied dumbly. Dante smirked “Bye” he said and gave you a kiss on the cheek, you blinked your eyes rapidly your cheeks flushing “Bye Dante” you said softly. Dante disappeared out of the cafeteria and the cafeteria erupted into loud whispers, you looked around you seeing so many eyes on you, you felt like shrinking just to not be seen. Suddenly you were grabbed by your arm and dragged forward. You looked up to see May and looked behind you to see Brian close behind. Once you were out of sight May stopped and let go of you, looking at you. You furrowed your eyebrows at her “What?” you asked confused, “That’s what I wanna ask you! What happened in there” she asked narrowing her eyes at you. You all heard footsteps coming your way and you three made a quick run for it to your secret hiding place for when you wanted to skip class. When you successfully got outside at the back of the school, you three climbed into the big tree until you were up high and not visible anymore.
