..
The Andersons had invited my family over for breakfast with them this morning, and to be honest, I didn't want to go. Don't get me wrong, a part of me lit up by the fact that I'd get to see Adeline, but she hates me and will barely even talk to me.
"Ma, I'm not hungry." Addy whispers to Rose, only I could hear it.
"Eat your breakfast. We have company." Rose harshly whispers. Addy groans and picks at her plate.
"Can you believe next year, Shelby will be in grade 10?" Rose gushes, making Shelby roll her eyes. "It seems like just yesterday, I was walking her into kindergarden."
"I need to use the bathroom." Addy clears her throat, standing up from the table.
"I need to also, excuse me." I stand up too, knowing that she really wasn't going to the bathroom.
"Go away Luke, don't you have a family to impress?" She sighs whilst sitting on her bed.
"No not at this hour." I laugh, pretending to check my watch. Addy doesn't budge though, her face remains flat lined.
"Look we're going to have to see each other all night tonight, will you please leave me alone?"
"No. Unless you'd like me to tell your family that your not really using the toilet."
She sighs and goes to her closet. She stands tall to reach a big cardboard box, dropping it on the ground. I instantly remember what it is the moment she opens the box. 'Class of 2010' it read on her graduation cap. After a while of digging around, and her looking like she could cry any minute, she pulls out our class photo that we had to take a the graduation ceremony. "Remember this?" Addy asks, holding it up to my face, while she looks away.
"Eh.. Sorta."
"You stepped on my foot so that my picture would be ruined. Do you know how many copies of these went around school?"
"Adeline, I'm sorry. I really am. I was-"
"You know that now I can't even show this to my family now to prove that you know me, because of that stunt you pulled?" She interrupts me. I know what she's trying to do. She's trying to make me feel bad so I'll go against my plan.
This huge pang of guilt, boiled up in my stomach. If only she knew how sorry I really am. "I've always been one step ahead of you." I wink.
"Get out." She scoffs.
"Ad-"
"What Luke? What? I mean really. What else do I have to lose?" She shakes her head and closes the door in my face. I've taken away that sweet and caring part of Adeline..
~xx~
I went home after breakfast to take a nap, and refresh before we leave for the drive-in movie.
~"Luke, hold me." Addy smiles, holing out her arms for me.
"Why?" I ask laughing.
"Because I'm lazy. Do you love me or not?"
"Of course I love you, you fool."
Then she attaches her lips to mine, and we fade away into the darkness.
"Luke! Wake up, we're leaving!" Mum yells over me.
I raise up and look around, feeling my stomach twist. It was only a dream. "Yeah, yeah. I'm coming."
"Hope it's not too tight, we're carpooling!" Marcus tells us as we climb into the car. Addy's pushed up in the side of the car with a big smile on her face, as Caleb slides in next to her, that is until she see me.
"Hey mate." Caleb fist bumps me.
"Hi." I nod.
~xx~
"What movie are we watching?" Adeline asks Marcus, yet again, a huge smile plastered on her face, which makes me smile.
"Whatever playing, I assume." He answers, pulling into the area. Adeline wastes no time climbing out of the car, and hopping on the roof.
"Luke you can sit by me." Shelby smirks, patting a spot. I shake my head and find my way to the roof.
"Did you come here to ruin this for me too?" Addy asks, glaring at me.
"Nope. Came here to ruin It for us." She stares at me for a moment, but turns back to the huge screen.
"Do you come here often?"
"Please don't flirt with me."
"Look who's conceded now. Actually I was simply asking if you come to this place a lot. But take it in either context, fine by me."
Addy sighs but doesn't answer. She peers over at and old swing set, one that still overlooks the screen, and gathers her things.
"Where you going?" Still no answer. So I follow.
"Will you please stop following me like a lost dog?"
"I will when I get my bone."
She turns her attention back to the screen, eating her popcorn. The angle the moonlight is hitting her, and at the angle she's sitting, makes her look like someone from a movie. So beautiful. Something so fragile, yet so strong. "Uh so you never answered my question."
"I don't answer to you."
I sigh and just let it be. "Because, families don't do this. Most people who come here are only here 'cause they're looking for a good place to fuck. My family does it for the fun."
I nod and turn the ropes to her swing facing me, pulling myself closer. My eyes flicker to her eyes to her mouth, as she copies my movements. Please let this be real.
