Anyway, we had our thanksgiving dinner in the kitchen. Mom made a lot of food for everyone. There were mashed potatoes, veggies, some barbeque, some other food that I didn't know what were called, and of course, a turkey. Mom always made such a delicious turkey. It was somehow sweet and salty, and it was one of a kind. She probably got the recipe from the internet, but still... Anyway, we were eating, the five of us.

"So Laura, how's school?" mom asked Laura. She didn't know Laura stopped because of the pregnancy thing though Laura didn't seem to have had a hard time lying.

"It was great." She nodded and smiled. "A lot of work, but manageable..."

"Mmm..." mom chewed. "You're getting a degree in Psychology, right?"

"Well..." she was probably disturbed by the whole lying thing. "Hopefully..."

"How about you, Alex? I heard you worked in Seattle for a year before you came to Berkeley." Mom asked. It was really weird how mom was asking questions that all have striking effects on us though she didn't know what really happened.

"Oh..." he coughed after taking a bite. "Yeah. It was a good experience, but now, I decided to get a degree in Berkeley first before pursuing my career further."

"That's great!" mom continued. "I'm glad you and Liyah kept strong even after a year of separate lives."

"Well..." I interrupted and patted Alex who was sitting next to me. I figured I should bring the whole lying thing since it was my fault for not telling her. "There were a bunch of hardships on the way... a few bumps, but we got through it."

"Well, that's true love." She said. Alex and I looked at each other. He kept on smiling while I kept on giving him my sorry face. I could feel Laura's and Harvey's smirks. Mom continued with the awkward functional-relationship speech. "Even through the longest time and distance, if it's true love, you'll always find a way back to each other."

"Yeah..." I nodded at Alex, continuing to lie. "Sounds like us, right honey?"

"Yes, yes." Alex held and rubbed my back, but I slowly and unnoticeably moved away. "Definitely us, honey."

"Awww, you two are so cute!" Laura laughed as she raised her glass of wine and started a toast. "To Alex and Liyah. For all the time you were separated, you never lost each other... a true love that never dies."

"Yes, indeed!" I continued to pretend while I raised my glass and vowed to slap Laura's boob for payback. Harvey, Alex, and mom toasted too.

"To Alex and Liyah." Mom and Harvey said both at the same time.

"To us..." I told Alex as we toasted. "Our functional relationship that never broke."

"Yes, to that." He smiled at me as he drank his glass of wine. "Never broke up..."

"Yes, not wavering even once." Laura started to tease. "Definitely not... and most importantly never broke up over text because that's just the most unexplained and inconclusive way to break up..."

"Oh, please..." I laughed. "Who breaks up over text? That's just stupid."

"Yeah..." Alex laughed too. "Only stupid people break up over text."

"Especially when the other person didn't text back, and it made the other one look like a stupid and naïve person that's talking to herself..." Harvey added to their humor. "Or himself... yes... Definitely something that didn't happen here..."
