Chapter 12

It was perfect. Everything was going well. Denali had said that they'd only need to stay a few days, until the threat was gone and now it seemed to have.

I felt a weight lift off my chest. The threat of possibly being maimed had hung over me like a dark cloud throughout their entire stay.

I enjoyed their company, on the little time I saw them, but I was constantly reminded that they were only here to protect me.

Apparently striking and rendering an Alpha unconscious didn't put you on their good side.

I sighed.

It was 1:47am now.

I couldn't sleep. I was so tired but my mind wouldn't shut off and let me drift into that comfortable oblivion I so badly wanted.

I lay facing the ceiling, eyes unblinking as I breathed slowly. The niggling in my head was back. It drilled deeper slowly, as soon as my head had hit the pillow three hours ago it had returned with a vengeance.

I had been confused but dismissed it; I had probably forgotten to do something, like lock the front door or shut a window.

Ugh, just go to sleep, I snarled to myself. I fight the urge to just slap myself round the face.

I tended to get really angry when things didn't go as planned.

And I was meant to be sleeping.

Grunting, I got up, being careful not to wake up Ilyanna, who lay beside me in the bed, her face serene and her breathing slow.

I slipped off the bed and went over to my wardrobe, taking out a long fleeced cardigan and pulling it on over my pyjamas.

I padded out of the room and slowly went downstairs. I vaguely noticed that the bandage around my leg had been re done and made a mental note to ask who did it so that I could thank them.

The house was encased in a thick darkness. I groped the wall and handle rail as I made my way downstairs and into the living room. I was suddenly extremely apprehensive.

My eyes took another moment to completely adjust to the dark but when I did I was confused.

Where Jared, Beni and Denali should have been was only empty space.

Their blankets and mats lay strewn, I felt my eyebrows crease in confusion as I strained my eyes to see where they could be. There was no way they were playing hide and seek with me his late at night. I hesitantly padded towards the kitchen, my nerves set and buzzing as my head swirled and my ears perked to hear sound. Any sound.

There was nothing but the faint whistle of the wind outside. I shivered. Where are they? Did they leave? I thought that was for the morning? Well, it was technically early morning now but... My thoughts drifted off, becoming more and more ridiculous and not relevant.

The light from the moon lit up my kitchen, faint beams of white light allowing my eyes to see clearer, there was the unwashed dishes from dinner, all of us too tired to do it, the fruit bowl on the centre of the island and the open window. I frowned. Why was the window open? I shrugged, figuring it must have been one of the guys, and walked over, hand reached out to pull it shut by the handle.
