Chapter 27

"Elisabeth?"

My eyes flickered open to the dark of the living room. My heart was pounding violently in my chest and my breathing was harsh.

I was back. I let that thought ground me a little.

Denali shook me, "Elisabeth?"

I could barely hear him though. What was that? Who was Wiliam really? And why was I always coming back to him? I understood that he was a member of Vampire royalty, what I didn't understand was why we were always colliding. How were we connected?

Warm calloused hands brushed up my arms and neck before cradling my face. "Elisabeth talk to me, please." He whispered.

I blinked, pulling myself from the heavy fog of thought and shock.

"What happened?" Denali asked, I turned so that I could face him properly. "I...don't really know myself." My voice trembled a little.

"Where did you go?" His question shocked me, "What do you mean?" I asked.

He sighed, his brows pulling down. "You just...went. It was like I was only holding your body in my arms, and the rest of you was somewhere else." Denali murmured, his arms tightening around me momentarily.

My skin buzzed with awareness. He was encasing me in his arms. I pushed him away a little so that I could sit up, his eyes darkened as he shifted. "I-" My voice croaked and I swallowed.

"I don't entirely know myself." I repeated. He continued to watch me as I tried to form a coherent sentence. My brows twitched in a frown. He sighed, one hand sliding behind my back and beginning to rub soft circles in my back. I closed my eyes.

"It doesn't matter." He murmured. My body relaxed, and I realised that I had been tense. A heavy feeling settled over me and I slowly lay back against the cushions of the sofa. I felt Denali shift, and his weight on the sofa disappear.

One eye peeled open in time to see him lean toward me and press his forehead to mine, his eyes were closed. "Where are you going?" I whispered.

"I'll be back before you wake up," He promised before smoothly leaving without a backwards glance. I watched him go, a faint bitter taste in my mouth with the absence of his presence. I sighed, laying back on the large cushion and feeling the leather of the sofa warm under my hands as I shifted to get more comfortable.

I took that time to think about all that had happened since that late night at work, and found that I would probably have never been able to tell this would be where I was in a few months from then. I probably would have naively said that I saw myself still there at Ahoy! Magazine. Being here had taught me a few things; not to wait on what you wanted most, and that there are things more dangerous than humans out there.

I mean, as a kid I'd liked the idea of all that supernatural stuff, but that had been the sense of adventure and excitement I'd gotten from reading books about them. I sat up slowly and touched the spot on my leg where I'd been bitten. The skin was smooth. My face twisted and my hands fluttered up to my shoulder where I'd also been wounded.
