Chapter 19

I was stunned.

Did he just change his eye colour?

"Uh," I vaguely recalled my voice warbling "I thought shifters only transformed into animals."

And that was what broke the thin ice. Val threw back his head and roared with laughter. Malakai rolled his eyes and clasped a steady hand on the mans shoulder, giving him a small disapproving look.

On the other hand Ilyanna stared at Val with dreamy eyes.

I warily eyed the man as he wiped away fake tears of mirth.

"Ah," The Viking chuckled, his eyes twinkling at me, it was vaguely disconcerting to have eyes the same as mine own staring back at me.

"I take it you've never met a Shifter?" He asked me, his gaze analysing my every movement, I fought from fidgeting on the spot and gave him the same level stare.

"No." I said.

He nodded "The name Shifter denotes that we can shift into whatever we want, whichever body part we choose in fact. So I can transform one hand into a bear paw whilst the rest of my body stays the same. That's why Shifters are so heavily regarded."

I frowned "Then why did you laugh at my question?" He smiled down at me, I watched in awe as his eyes darkened to a near black before slowly lightening to the peridot green he wore before.

"It's considered common knowledge. I just found it funny how you hung out with these dorks and knew hardly anything." He answered, sliding one hand into his jacket pocket.

I pursed my lips "I know a decent amount and besides," I paused for emphasis "a month or so ago I didn't know such fantasy existed. Cut me some slack, geez."

His mouth quirked up as he regarded me once more. I didn't miss the appreciation that lurked in his eyes, but didn't comment on it as I stared back.

"Touché." He smirked, then turned to Malakai "So where's Denali at? He said it was urgent."

Malakai pulled his hand from his shoulder "Yeah, that must be why you're here early?" Val nodded, eyebrow raised "Denali was called by Chief Ban to sort something out." He continued.

Val's smile dropped slightly and a wrinkle appeared between his angled brows. "Oh, I'll have to talk to him later." He sighed "He said it was an emergency so I dropped everything."

Malakai chuckled "You didn't have to do that."

Val smiled wryly "It doesn't matter, I wanted to get away from Marissa anyway." Malakai headed over to the car the reset go the guys had been preoccupied with, picking up a wrench and sliding under the car.

"You probably used this as an excuse to get away then." His muffled voice said.

Val threw a hand to his forehead in ale distress "How you wound me. I think you'll find I came to aid a good friend." He said defensively.

I relaxed in his presence, he reminded me of Edwin. Despite his joking exterior, I could see that e was genuinely worried about whatever it was that Denali wanted to talk about.
