Chapter 26

"Is it so wrong for me to think that he doesn't want it?" Ilyanna said softly, her voice cracking slightly in pain, "The baby?"

I clenched the duvet of her bed. We were both sat in the dark of her room, her blinds open a snap casting a bluish light over a large portion of the cream carpet. "No, of course not." I whispered back.

A few minutes ago we had heard Denali and Anokan go back downstairs. They didn't open Ilyanna's door and interrogate us for snooping like I thought they would. It made me question whether they had heard our scuffle in the stairs or not.

But it was impossible for them not to, after all they did have incredibly sensitive hearing being Yukon.

I frowned and looked up at Ilyanna. Her face was distraught. Her pretty eyes were rimmed with red, her hair a mess about her face and her lips set in a grimace.

"You deserve better." I said suddenly, "I mean, this guy hasn't noticed his feelings for you at all, and they're clearer to see than toothpaste on a black shirt. If he was your ideal guy I'm sure he wouldn't treat you like this."

Her brows puckered, "I just...hoped that he'd see, you know? All I wanted, from the age of 15, was for him to actually see me." Her mouth twisted, "All he had eyes for was Yodekha. I didn't stand a chance." She buried her head in the crook of one arm that leaned against her folded legs.

My chest panged. I could see her conflicting emotions to easily. There was pain, loss and anguish.

"What if it's not his?" I said, so quietly it was almost unheard. She peeked at me, her dark eyes sad and hopeless.

"Didn't you hear me? He's always had eyes for her, it's not going to change how he sees me." Her tone was bitter. I ignored the fact that she had practically just sunk her teeth into me.

I sensed that she wouldn't get herself out of this wallowing state anytime soon. I wasn't going to be able to easily get Malakai's thoughts about her, the guy would be wary of these things around me, even if we were friends now. I was still new to everything.

Which meant I needed someone else to do it for me. I could ask Jared, Beni or Anokan. Wait, not Beni, he was now on Malakai's blacklist so that wouldn't work.

Jared probably wouldn't be able to make it subtle enough. Which left Anokan.

"I'll get it," I said softly, rising from the bed and leaving, I shut the door with a quiet click behind me. I faced the door still and sighed before turning to head downstairs. It would have worked if I hadn't been seized suddenly by the forearm and tugged into the room opposite. As soon as I was sure my feet wouldn't trip over one another I looked up and glared. Denali's amused face looked back down at me.

His hand was still holding onto my forearm. I tugged it from him sharply and hissed, "What was that for?"

He looked down at his hand, as if he couldn't believe he had done it, before glancing up at me through thick, black lashes. My heart thumped painfully.
