Chapter 17

"When will Val be here?" Ilyanna asked, picking at a piece of French toast on her plate. We were silently eating now. Denali hadn't returned yet and I felt myself growing impatient and antsy.

I had to restrain myself from fiddling with the edge of the napkins.

Why should I care where he was? I sighed into the hot chocolate I had ordered, the heat of the cup scalding my palms, but I didn't care.

"He should be here tomorrow or the day after." Jared answered, stuffing a piece of bacon in his mouth "It depends on what time his flight is. I only got the basics from Denali."

I sipped the hot liquid, not paying attention to the rich flavour that exploded in my mouth, my eyes drawn outside to the busy street. The sky wasn't overcast anymore, it was a pale blue and there was a faint hint of light from the sun. "It's a nice day." I murmured to myself.

"Yeah," Ilyanna propped her chin on my shoulder "it's been a while."

"I would say 'lets go to the mountains' but I'm too lazy today." Malakai's lip quirked "Plus, Denali would get a stomach ulcer."

"It's too soon," Jared said "I can't believe they think they have a chance against us. Laughable really." His voice dropped and his lip curled. Malakai nodded and Beni agreed.

"I think it's because a certain short tempered Alpha hasn't pulled the hearts from their chests yet. He's kinda renowned for not taking shit, he hasn't before. And they've never been as cocky as they have suddenly become." He paused, a frown appearing on his face, he chewed on his thumb "What's up with that?"

"Maybe there's just a rise in testosterone?" Ilyanna suggested. Everyone besides me and Jorge shot her a dirty look. "That has nothing to do with it." Malakai waved off "If you piss us off, we're going to attack you. It's that simple. The thing is, we haven't actually done anything to egg them on this time.

I mean sure, last time it was because Jared got one of their chicks but that was settled ages ago." Jared nodded, a small smirk on his face.

"It was worth it." Ilyanna leaned over to swat him but he dodged neatly.

I laughed "You horndog."

He winked at me. "They must have been planning it for a while." Jorge put in solemnly, stark down at his coffee "There was nothing from them until that sudden attack. They were prepared and we were not," he looked up "they knew we were distracted and used it to their advantage."

The guys nodded. I didn't bother trying to understand, it would just confuse me more right now, I could even focus right now. My mind kept drifting back to Denali. I sighed and put my cup down, standing up. Ilyanna shot me a questioning look.

"Toilet." I stated. She nodded and I span and went to the back doors.

I wasn't really going there of course, my head swivelled as I tried to find Denali. There were the signs pointing to the toilets along a hallway and at the end was a door.
