Chapter 15

"How is that possible?" Ilyanna asked, voice laced with disbelief as she stared at my shoulder. I shrugged, smiling wryly.

"It just...happened, I guess." Was all I could say.

Unlike Denali she didn't immediately assume that I had done something- what could I have done exactly? I had no magical powers, that was them.

One hand reached out and brushed the skin of my shoulder. I watched her intently but her face didn't change. She sat back and pondered before her face broke into a wide smile.

I swallowed, unsettled by the mischief blazing in her eyes.

"Well this is perfect." She cried "We don't have to be cooped up in here all the time now that you're better." Her eyes widened in excitement "We can go sledging like you wanted."

I chuckled, relief flooding me. "That sounds awesome," I paused "but do you think those guys would be willing to go? Is it not dangerous anymore? Have the Takotna given up?"

Ilyanna laughed at my nerves and waved them off with a careless hand "It's fine. I know these guys are dying to get out and stretch their legs properly plus, we haven't heard or seen any motion from the Takotna tribe since they attacked again."

"I hope you're right." I said doubtfully.

Twenty minutes later, and a long argument between Anokan and Ilyanna, we got the go ahead to go sledging.

I had been sceptical of Denali's agreement but brushed it off and went to get ready.

"THIS IS GONNA BE SO MUCH FRICKIN' FUN." Ilyanna screamed at me as we left the house. I smiled wryly and locked the door, zipping the keys in a secure pocket on the inside of my coat.

"Ilyanna stop being a twerp and hurry up." Beni scolded playfully as he walks past, ruffling my hair. I scowled at him whilst Ilyanna flipped him the bird.

Then she turned to me, a wide smile still plastered on her face, and tugged me after the guys, each of them carrying a wooden sledge. Ilyanna was carrying ours, it was tucked securely under her other arm.

I had offered to carry it but she shot me a don't-mess-with-me-babes face. I backed off straight away.

"So where exactly are we going?" I asked as we pushed through the line of trees. Ilyanna tugged me to the path that was just in sight, the guys swiftly gaining more distance.

"An isolated place where we won't be bothered." She told me, tugging harder on my jacket. I smiled and let her drag me forward so we were walking beside Beni.

He glanced at me and rolled his eyes with a twitch of a smile. I scuffed my boots and nearly fell face first on the snowy ground.

Strong hands on each of my biceps caught me and righted me. I looked up, both Ilyanna and Beni were letting go of me, eyes watching to see if I'd fall again.

I smiled sheepishly and thanked them. Beni just nodded whilst Ilyanna smiled and proceeded to occupy my attention with her chatter until we reached our destination.

We had been walking for about half an hour but my legs were burning and my blood pumping around my body with too much heat. I was tempted to take off my thick coat but Beni told me not to, saying that I'd freeze again in seconds.

We arrived after a steady upward trek through snow and trees. I didn't fall again and, whilst listening to Ilyanna and giving half assed answers, kept my eyes peeled on the smooth ground for any sign of a trunk or branch that would make me trip.
