I left the cottage at dawn with my bag and coat in hand, treading through the tall unkept grass towards my destination. I wanted to paint the flowers by the lake. The plants that grew near where I live aren't anything special, but they looked especially beautiful bathed in the golden glow of the rising sun. It was a typical spring morning, like any other, but I felt like today was going to be very special.

Finding a nice dry spot under the billowing branches of a willow I sit amid the grass. I glance at the the flowers swaying in the gentle wind, their bright colours lifting my spirits. Pulling out my blank pages, and paints I set out to capture this moment in time. Dipping my brush in the paints I let my hand glide over the page in a series of flowing strokes, creating a scene of tranquility. The colours mixed and bloomed in an array of sun kissed scenery, almost like something out of a fairytale.

"That's a beautiful painting." A voice from behind me stated. Startled I turned around quickly, almost knocking over my paints. Looking to see who had spoken, I saw it was a boy, probably around my age with a mess of wavy bronze coloured hair upon his head. "Who are you? I haven't seen you around here before..." I spoke hastily startled by his sudden appearance.
"My family is staying at a vacation home not too far from here, and I was just exploring. Do you live around here?"
"Um yes, I live not far from here..." I suddenly felt really awkward and out of place.
"Well that's nice, but what's a young lady such as yourself doing here all by herself? Where are your parents, shouldn't they have accompanied you?"
"I don't need anyone to look after me, I am perfectly  capable of taking care of myself."
"Don't tell me your a runaway or something." He calmly said chuckling lightly and sitting down beside me.
"Of course not! I've just decided that I don't need anyone other than myself." What does he know about my life anyway? What about him? Where are his parents!?
"That doesn't sound like fun at all... You must be really lonely right?" He looked me in the eye frowning a little. I shifted, uncomfortable with being so easily seen through.
"I'm not lonely at all..." It comes out as a mumble, as if I'm trying to reassure myself.
"Don't even try to convince me otherwise, it's as clear as day that you're lonely, there's no need to hide it, so how about we be friends? My name is Aldwin." He exclaimed reaching out a hand, a smile gracing his face. "Rena, my name is Rena..." I took his outstretched hand, shaking it tentatively.

We sat for hours talking about all sorts of things. I was a bit award at first, but it was the first time in my life that I had felt so happy. It filled me with a sense of giddiness and warmth, and soon my painting lay to the side, discarded, and completely forgotten...

"It's raining..."
The light pitter patter of the falling rain drops glittering in the shining sun beams. It was a calming sound. A few drops had penetrated the thick canopy that sheltered us, shattering upon impact and creating ripples along the glassy surface of the lake in front of us.
"If we're lucky maybe we'll see a rainbow..." He said glancing at the fragments of sky through the canopy of swaying willow branches. Suddenly he was pulling me with him and we exited our shelter, into the open field. "Come on!" He said swinging me around, his face flushed with laughter and before I knew it I began laughing along too.

As the rain fell down around us we laughed, dancing among the droplets. We were having the time of our lives, I had forgotten all of my sorrow and loneliness in the blink of an eye. I never wanted it to end, this strange overwhelming feeling of warmth.

We fell to the grass and lay looking up to the heavens. "Look." Aldwin exclaimed, eyes squinted as he pointed towards the horizon. An arc of brilliant colours glittered in the drizzling rain and shining sun rays. It was the most breathtaking thing I had ever seen.
"Wow..." It came out as a whisper of awe. "This is my first time seeing something like this in person..." I had only heard about and seen illustrations of them in books.
"I've seen a few from my window before, but I've never experienced looking at them like this..." Aldwin was smiling at me.

I closed my eyes inhaling the the sweet scent of the spring rain. Opening my eyes I looked at Aldwin returning his smile. I'm really happy he had come and turned my life around. "Thank you..." I whisper quietly.
