Chapter 5: Fear

"Father," I asked when I was very young "who killed Mother?"

"Barbarians." he replied.

I scowled at him while Victoria slept peacefully in her bed. "No-who REALLY killed her?"

Father looked away.

"Tell me!" I demanded.

"Okay, okay." He ran a hand down his face then turned back to me "Your mother...was..."his voice cracked; I scowled at him further, seeing his reaction as a weakness, "she was killed by....."

-another crack-

"by humans." he finally concluded.

I clenched my hands into tight fists and let my anger simmer and boil. Those idiots had paid with their own lives and blood for their murder. My own mother....overtaken by rats! I chuckled humorlessly and darkly.

What fools.

All humans were brainless cattle vessels of rich blood.

"Vladimir, a group of them hunted us down and stole her away from me."

"Why didn't you just kill them off?" I crossed my arms over my chest "I thought you loved her."

"I do-did! Vlad, I was paralyzed with fear-"

"Fear is weakness. That's why humans are weak and we're not." I sneered "They don't even deserve to live. All their good for is blood and, when I grow up, se-"

"Let's not get into that last topic yet. You're not old enough" he spoke quickly and raised a hand to silence me; I smacked it away, angry at having been interupted-it was the first time he'd ever done it.

"Fine. Whatever. But you know it's true."

He sighed deeply.

Without a care in the world and my mind focused on obtaining sweet, adrenaline spiced blood, I strode into the tiny town like I owned the place. Time to get bloody and full.

------------------------------Victoria's POV---------------------------------------

I followed my brother's scent as fast as I could without hurting myself. Who knew what kind of state of mind he'd be in when I reached him? For all I knew, he could be ripping out a throat by now-and that wasn't something I wanted to interrupt; Vlad, like any other vampire, was set into a primal state where everyone else was the enemy while feeding. When interrupted, we were always a force to be reckoned with-even to our own kind.

While still moving, I reached out to his mind with my own. Vlad, stop this!

Fuck off. I'm thirsty.

You can't feed off them! You have a slave!

No way-she sucks!

I ground my teeth together. Just because she won't back down to you doesn't mean she's bad.  Then an idea came to me and I grinned. I bet you couldn't even make her fear you for shit anyway.

Vladimir stopped just before reaching the first house he intended on pillaging. What?! he snarled dangerously. If there was one thing my killer of a brother couldn't handle or back down from, it was a bet against his abilities-especially when concerned with a human.
