Morning arrived quietly, wrapped in warmth. Wooyoung woke up to a soft humming. It wasn't the distant noise of the city, nor the occasional chirping of birds perched on the snow covered trees outside. This sound stayed. It lingered. He blinked awake, his emerald eyes adjusting to the gentle light spilling into the hallway beyond the room. It had been three months since he'd found this place; since the cold, lonely streets had turned into warm floors, and uncertainty had turned into something that certainly felt like home with San and his humans.
San was still asleep beside him, curled up neatly and leaning into him, just the way Wooyoung loved. He watched for a moment longer than necessary, smiling softly at the way San's little face was half-covered by one of his own paws. Carefully, Wooyoung slipped away, the smile never leaving his face.
The humming was coming from the kitchen. And it smelled good. Suspiciously good.
Seonghwa stood at the counter in a soft sweater, sleeves rolled up, dusting powdered sugar from his hands. Hongjoong hovered nearby, reading something from his phone and occasionally pointing at the mixing bowl.
"I think that's enough sugar," Hongjoong said. Seonghwa scoffed. "There's no such thing during Christmas."
Wooyoung jumped onto a chair, then onto the table, nose twitching furiously. Seonghwa laughed softly. "Oh! hey there. Good morning, Wooyoung~" Wooyoung answered with a small whine, eyes still fixed intently on whatever Seonghwa was making.
San appeared a moment later, hopping up beside him and startling him just a little. "You left me alone in the room," San huffed, gently biting Wooyoung's ear in protest. "You were sleeping like a kitten," Wooyoung purred, rubbing his face against San's. "I felt bad waking you up. Sorry~" "Alright, alright. Apology accepted," San said, tail swishing happily from the affection.
Wooyoung turned back to the table. "By the way... what is Seonghwa doing?" "Looks like they're making gingerbread cookies," San sniffed, followed by a soft meow. Wooyoung squinted. "Wow. They smell like happiness." San chirped. "They always do!"
Hongjoong smiled warmly at the two cats lost in their little conversation. "Merry Christmas, guys. Especially to you, Wooyoungie." The warmth in his human's words made Wooyoung's heart flutter. He wasn't used to words like that; words that stayed. Words that wrapped around him like a blanket. San bumped his shoulder gently. "It's okay. He means it." Wooyoung didn't reply, but his tail flicked happily as Seonghwa set down two tiny, cat-safe cookie shapes beside them. "These are just for you," Seonghwa said. "No sugar. No spices. Just love. We made them in advance because we knew you'd be hungry the moment you woke up." Wooyoung sniffed carefully, then took a bite. His eyes widened. "Oh," he whispered to San. "Oh! this is... this is illegally good." San giggled, cookie crumbs clinging to his whiskers.
