AND I DO NOT OWN WINGS OF FIRE

(Y/n) pov

For some reason my nightmares always come with memories.

Mother had been more angry lately, not enough that made me feel completely hated, but enough to make me notice how much she favored Snowflake. My other sisters, Penguin and Caribou hadn't ever been punished as badly before they had been sent off to the war. It was small things at first, stern looks, scolding, the occasional outburst of anger, normal parent things. But the older I got, the worse punishments became, ignoring me for days, not allowing me sleep and making me train extra, but the one punishment I loathed more than anything was food being withheld. It felt harsh for a 2 year old dragonet.

Snowflake had recently scored well on a test, a solid 3 out of 4. Our mother beamed at her, taking any chance to pepper sweet kisses on Snowflake's forehead, reminding her how smart of a dragonet she was.

The next day I brought back the same test, 4 out of 4.

I had walked in the doorway of our home, so ready to be showered in praise that I was practically buzzing in excitement. The three of my sisters wouldn't be home, and neither would my step father Peak due to his deployment. This meant it was finally my time to get love.

Mother was in the kitchen, chopping up some vegetables she probably got from the Sandwings. On one of the larger icy walls of the house was the test Snowflake had brought home, held up on a tiny pin, up on display so anyone could see and mine would be right there next to hers.

I hadn't even cared to try and one up Snowflake, in my mind it wasn't a competition. I just wanted to see my mother smile at me. Something I hadn't seen since I was much younger.

I stood behind her, watching for a few seconds as she chopped up the strange plants with a heavy kitchen knife. ¨Mother,¨ I said softly, careful not to startle her.

She stopped chopping immediately, looking up and out the window in front of her, she stayed frozen, almost as if she was debating giving me attention. After the silent heartbeats she turned to me slowly, her long ruff of spikes clattering. Her sharp stormy blue eyes peering down at me, I held up my perfectly marked test for her to see, and I smiled pridefully, awaiting her to scoop me into her wings and parade me around as if she had just found diamonds.

¨What?¨ She huffed. ¨Cant you see Im busy?¨

Her cold attitude flew over my head, I just held the test a bit higher, a bit prouder.

She turned back to the chopping board, slicing through the vegetables as if I had never even spoken to her. 'Maybe she didn't notice that I was showing her a test,' I told myself foolishly.

I cleared my throat a bit, ¨Mother, I scored perfectly on this t-,¨

¨Are you blind?!¨ She growled, ¨I'm busy preparing dinner. I don't have time to look at your stupid test!¨

¨But you cared about Snowflake-¨

¨Oh, is that what this is? You're trying to be better than your sister!¨ She was fuming, clutching the knife so hard in her talons I was scared it would splinter and break, ¨We do not compete in this family!¨

Her teeth were barred as she loomed over me, staring down at me with the sharp watchful eyes of a hawk. My wings slightly trembled, my jaw shaking in fear and my eyes welling with tears. But I still couldn't let it go like a stupid dragonet.

¨No! I-I'd never try to be better, I just- I-,¨

¨Are you talking back?¨ She scoffed with a disgusted look, slamming the knife down on the counter. ¨Fine. Since you want to act like a grown dragon then I guess you won't be included in dinner.¨
