"Hey baby?" You called out as you stepped into the apartment you shared with your girlfriend, immediately confused as you noticed the lights were still out and no sound could be heard. She was usually home by now unless the day's shoot went long, but in that case she would always let you know. "Jenna? You home, lovie?" You spoke again, already pulling out your phone to check for a message from her.
As soon as you saw that she hadn't texted you, you decided you might as well just check in, especially knowing she could be forgetful if work got too stressful.
You: [Hey baby! I just got home and was wondering if you're still at work/ when you'll be home. Let me know. I love you.]

As soon as you sent the text, you set your phone down on the counter and walked back toward your bedroom. You usually wouldn't have been so quick to worry about the fact that Jenna wasn't home yet, but the last few weeks her job had been extra stressful for her and she had sort of shut down on you.
She had always been good about communicating what she was feeling, until it came down to her work. She didn't like to let anyone down and so if the stress got too much she often forgot she was allowed to be just Jenna and not whatever character she was playing at the time.
As you shed off your work clothes and began to get ready to make a late dinner, you couldn't help but feel the nervousness start to grow in your chest. Even if she was simply just at work late, that probably meant even more stress was being added on, and you didn't feel like anything you did was much help. No matter how many conversations the two of you had where you would offer help, she always pretended that she didn't need it or that there was nothing you could do.
You made your way back into the kitchen and grabbed your phone off of the counter, opening it expecting even just a quick reply from her saying she was gonna be late, but instead there was something you weren't expecting...
You: [Hey baby! I just got home and was wondering if you're still at work/ when you'll be home. Let me know. I love you.]

Read...?
Jenna never left you on read. It may sound childish or stupid when said out loud, but she knew how scared you were of being ignored or abandoned since it seemed everyone in your past had done just that.
Your heart immediately sank in your chest, your throat going dry as you stared down at the small four letter word on your screen. You typed one message full of preemptive apologies, and then deleted it, your head immediately telling you that it would just make you seem desperate and drive her away.
One part of you knew that you were probably being irrational and freaking out over nothing... But the other part? That back half of your mind telling you that she was suddenly done with you? Overanalyzing every interaction that you had with her in the past three weeks? That part? It was taking center stage.
Your fingers practically flew over the screen as you typed and deleted a million different messages, finally settling on one that didn't seem like too much.
You: [Everything okay, my love? Did I do something?]

As soon as you sent it you felt stupid for asking. If you asked that meant she would answer... And that meant she could tell you all of the things you had done wrong. All of the things that were driving her away. All of the reasons she was going to leave...
You made yourself set your phone down. Needing to distract yourself before you send another message digging yourself in a deeper hole. So, the next best option was trying to find something to do. You made yourself a small dinner, but then just ended up staring at it on the table, void of an appetite as your mind raced.
