Chapter 16
“When does it end!?” I said, leaning against the wall of the bathroom. Liam sat on the edge of the bath tub. My stomach had been practically turned inside out. I was cross legged on the cold tile floor. Liam chuckled softly.
“I promise it will get better.” He said, his voice full of pity. He had been looking after me all morning. He even made me a delicious looking breakfast-- It was a shame that I wouldn’t be able to finish it. My phone buzzed on the floor beside me. It was my boss, probably yelling at me for not coming into work. I sent a quick text back, telling her that I was too sick to come into work.
“Think your ok enough to lie on the couch?” He asked. I nodded slowly and allowed him to help me up. My head spun once I got up, but I quickly recovered by hanging onto Liam’s arm. He carefully led me down the stairs and into the living room. Once I had sat on the couch, he ran back upstairs, returning with a blanket and a pillow. I was freezing but still sweating. He had me lie down while he sat at the other end of the couch, with my feet in his lap. He turned on the TV and handed me the remote telling me to watch whatever I wanted.
“So what exactly happened last night? I’ve had hangovers but nothing this bad.” I said while flipping through the channels.
“Some jealous fan spiked your drink.” He said, his voice came out with an edge. I stopped channel surfing when I saw a picture of me and it wasn’t pretty. “You don’t need to watch that.” He said reaching for the remote. I put it just out of his reach and focused on the TV.
“Looks like One Direction’s after party got a little out of hand for Gracie
Hattaway. Looks like she’s a bit of a party girl. She had to be carried out of the London flat in member-and rumored boyfriend- Liam Payne’s arms.” The picture flashed on the screen of my limp body in Liam’s arms. His facial expressions told me that he was yelling at the paparazzi. Perrie and Zayn were visible in the background, policing the group. I looked at Liam who was watching my face. “When we tried to ask Liam why Gracie was unconscious, he replied with well, exactly what was on his mind. One Direction sped away from the flat in a rush. We will try to keep you fans updated on this budding romance.” I turned to Liam to find him looking at me.
“You did all that for me?” I asked shocked that he would put in that much effort for me. The other boys strolled into the room, rubbing their eyes.
“Why is it so bright in here?” Harry asked rubbing his temples.
“Because it’s noon boys. Want the Hangover treatment?” Liam replied. They all nodded and sat in various seats in the living room.
“What’s the hangover treatment?” I asked Zayn as he took Liam’s seat.
“Liam takes care of us. Aspirin and Water with breakfast.” Niall replied.
“Seems like you got the special treatment though.” Louis said with jealousy veining in his voice. “Doesn’t surprise me though.”
“What do you mean?” I said while my head throbbed from all of the thinking.
“He only cares for certain people like he took care of you last night and today.” Zayn added.
“When he last took care of someone like that, it was Danielle. He really does care about you, even if he won’t admit it.” Harry added as Liam walked back into the room, with four water bottles in hand and a bottle of aspirin in the other. “You know what we mean.” Harry said as he walked out of the room with a wink. The other boys followed as they downed their water and pills.
“Want some tea?” He said and I nodded and he arrived back on the couch with a hot cup of tea. I held it in my hands and took small sips. “So what were you guys chatting about?” He said, taking his seat next to me.
“Nothing much. So why is such a brilliant guy like you still single?” I asked while sipping my tea. He looked thoughtfully at the carpet and took a deep breath.
“I could ask you the same thing.” I thought about how Oliver had broken my heart and cringed at the memory, my chest tightened at the familiar pain of my shattered heart. Now, I was looking at the man who had finally mended the last of the cracks.
“Well, I the only boyfriend I ever had was a guy named Oliver...” My mind drifted back to the day. “It was March and a cold wind was still left over from Winter.” I began telling Liam, he looked at me intently, like he genuinely cared. I remember running through the parking lot, dodging cars as I made my way to Oliver’s dorm room to surprise him for our anniversary. I burst through the door to his room with a huge smile on my face, but it soon faltered. On the bed was Oliver, but he was making out with a blonde bimbo who soon looked up to me, obviously startled that someone had just walked in on their heated tongue wrestling. Oliver began to talk but stopped when i sent him a look that could kill. The blonde, obviously oblivious that he was my boyfriend, piped up. “Hi! I’m Sheyenne, you must be Oliver’s cousin Gracie? Happy Birthday!” Birthday? he told her it was my birthday? Before I did something I would surely regret, I plastered a fake barbie-like smile on my face and sweetened my tone. “I see you are very happy together.” I sighed “Oliver, I’ll leave you to tell her.” I gritted my teeth when I saw Sheyenne's confused facial expression. How could that arsehole hurt girls who loved him without a second thought. I turned on my heel and briskly walked out of the room, beginning to sprint as I hit the parking lot. I could already feel the hot tears running down my cheeks but I didn’t care, I just had to leave. My voice cracked as I finished telling Liam about it and he looked shocked and disgusted.
“He cheated on you? On your anniversary? Wow jerk move.” He said shortly. “That’s just awful. Well it was his loss, your a great girl.” He said smiling sweetly. With his thumb he wiped away the tears on my cheek that i hadn't even realized were there. With such a simple move my heart swelled and a smile returned to my face. What did it matter what Oliver had done? I had Liam.
*Liam’s POV*
“Well go on. I said mine.” Gracie said as she finished off her tea and put the cup on the coffee table. I hadn’t even told the boys why I had been so upset about her. Dani was the love of my life.
“Well I dated Danielle for a good long time but, she got so busy with her job as a dancer and my being busy with the band didn’t help. And we just kind of drifted apart.” She gave me a look of sympathy and I continued. “That is until I took her out for Valentines day. She had a performance so I sat in the audience. After that we went to their party and it only took about an hour before I found her kissing her director.”
“I’m so sorry. It was her loss anyway.” Gracie said putting a consoling hand on my forearm. Even at her touch I felt electricity through my spine. She truly was an amazing, brilliant girl. Her eyes met mine. They were still the slightest bit hazy from last night but the life was still there. She was right by my side, looking at me with her hazel eyes. In that moment there was only one thing on my mind; How much I wanted her to be mine.
“Gracie, you’re truly beautiful.” I said, barely above a whisper, a smirk found its way onto my face “Even with a hangover.” she chuckled lightly, a small smile on her lips, I felt satisfactory at the fact that I had put it there. “Gracie would you--” my voice was interrupted by the doorbell. I sighed in frustration and went to answer it. I immediately regretted opening that door. In front of me was the very reason my life had fallen apart while the girl that had finally fixed it was waiting for me in the living room.
“Well hello there, Liam.”
