Rok Soo ignored them and returned to the cave. He still had one small thing to retrieve before he could go home. The little dragon naturally followed him, while the butler and Basen remained outside, still lost in their thoughts.
---
It took only a few minutes, and when Rok Soo came out, he saw Ron coming toward him. "I'm done here, we can go home."
Ron nodded, and together they returned to Basen.
Rok Soo was about to ask the dragon to use its magic, but a loud, worried voice stopped him.
"Young master, are you all right?!"
Two guards came to meet them on the beach. They were probably on patrol, which was a normal decision after the bomb incident, but very annoying in his opinion.
He turned to the knights in full armor and smiled politely, but the two men stared at him with wide eyes.
"Are you hurt?!"
Rok Soo looked down at himself. His clothes were indeed red with Paston's blood. He had knelt down to help him and hadn't paid attention to the ground. On top of that, there was the arm he had cut off...
He looked at Basen and Ron, silently asking them for help. Honestly, he didn't know what to say: "No, it wasn't my blood." He would have to answer too many questions, and the opposite would achieve the same result. Lying about where it came from would be stupid too, even low-ranking knights could tell the difference between blood and dye or anything else.
There was a long silence, then Ron spoke up. Rok Soo could thank him graciously later.
"The young master wasn't feeling well and hurt himself when he fell."
Or maybe not... He barely managed to hold back a sigh.
The guard who had spoken and his colleague seemed even more worried now. "You should go back as soon as possible! We will escort you to the estate and notify your doctor in advance." One of the men ran off, while the other approached Cale.
"Do you need help walking, young master?"
"There's no need, we'll do it." True to his word, Ron supported Cale on one side and Basen stood calmly on the other, neatly staging their lie.
Then, together, the group left the beach to return to the estate.
---
They arrived in front of the Ubarr estate and were greeted by the nobles of the northeast and Cale's personal doctor, who was waiting with his briefcase already in hand.
Amiru, Gilbert, and Eric froze when they saw the state of their friend. The young woman put her hand to her mouth in shock. Like her, the two young masters were worried. They wanted to go to Cale, but given the events of the last few days, they weren't sure if it was really their place.
Unlike them, the doctor didn't hesitate and ran towards him. "Where are you hurt, young master?! We must treat you quickly and stop the bleeding."
Cale was dragged inside by the doctor and taken to the living room, the room closest to the entrance.
The doctor forced him to sit on the sofa and began to check him with his mana. Cale didn't even have time to refuse or say that he was fine. He had to quickly figure out how to get out of this mess without causing more trouble.
Unfortunately, the doctor was quicker than his thoughts. "That's not your blood." The man stared at him with a frown, and the nobles who had been watching him with concern now looked at him with strange expressions.
"Cale, what have you done?" Amiru asked in a flat voice.
"I—"
Knowing full well that he was going to lie again, she took the lead this time. "I don't care about your secrets, but I need to know if you pose a threat to my territory. There have already been several incidents since you've been here. I won't hesitate to call in my guards if necessary."
"I'm not a danger."
Amiru waited for Cale to argue or at least try to defend himself further, but he didn't. This attitude rekindled her anger. "Very well." She left and returned a few seconds later with two men. The same people who had accompanied them to the estate.
"Where did you find young master Cale?"
"Near the north coast, on one of the beaches."
"Can you find the place again if necessary?"
Even though they didn't understand the purpose of this question, they answered easily. "Of course."
"Perfect, you can leave."
They obeyed and went outside. Amiru had been staring at Cale throughout the exchange. "Now, if you don't talk, I'll go inspect that beach myself."
'Damn.' He was running out of options. Otherwise, he would risk an even bigger misunderstanding and things would become even more complicated.
"There were dead bodies in a cave. They were already dead when I arrived."
"Dead bodies?" Amiru seemed worried again.
"Yes, but it's not a problem or anything dangerous."
"Excuse me?!" They had let Amiru handle the situation; it was her territory, after all. But Cale's lighthearted words in the face of the situation confused them. "How-"
"You're lying." Everyone turned to the normally silent Gilbert, who had cut Eric off. "If you found dead bodies, I imagine they were on the ground?"
It was a strange question, but the two young masters quickly understood his reasoning. Their eyes fell on Rok Soo's clothes, and he cursed inwardly.
"How do you explain the blood on your shirt, then?" Young Master Gilbert continued, knowing they had understood the inconsistency.
Cale sighed, earning several dark looks. "I had to help someone. He was injured after fighting the mermaids. He killed them, not me."
"Wait, mermaids? The dead are sea people?"
"Yes, that's why it doesn't concern us."
"And the person you say you saved?"
He didn't like Amiru's tone, but answered anyway. "A whale."
Another silence fell, the three nobles seemed to be thinking. Cale could only wait for his fate.
"You are confined to your room until this matter is resolved." She continued quickly, knowing the weight of her words. "It's not that I don't believe you, but I have to be careful. If we confirm your story, you will be free. And that goes for you two as well, since you were both with him after all." She glanced at Basen and Ron. Then she turned away and left. Eric and Gilbert followed her. Two other guards entered behind them and escorted Cale, Basen, and Ron to their respective rooms.
The door closed, and Cale sighed dramatically. Now that he was alone, he took the opportunity to change into something cleaner and drier. He ended up relaxing in his bed and taking a nap, it wasn't as if he could do anything else anyway.
