CHAPTER FOURTEEN - 'Time for an Explanation'
Fleeing from Gold's den, you and Mike stampede up the steps, tripping and swearing, until you barge through the door and double over, panting. You couldn't believe it. Couldn't believe Gold. Why in the name of pepperoni pizzas, did Gold have human skin in box? You wanted to puke at that very moment in time, and Mike seemed to be along the same track as you.
Slowly straightening up, you try to make sense of the flickering lights and the odd blackness that lit up every time you exhaled. You glanced over your shoulder to find that the door used to access the basement had disappeared into the wall, and you couldn't see it anymore.
"I can't even.." Mike inhaled sharply, blinking rapidly, before composing himself. "Gold was hiding something other than those human skins or whatever."
"Why do you say that?" You reply, hoping silently that Mike was wrong this time. You didn't want to know why Gold had those suits or how he got them, for that matter.
Mike inhaled and exhaled again, before speaking, "You know that cupboard thing? I swear he's got something secret in there. Do you... no, screw that, I don't want to go to Gold's den again. Ever." Mike declared.
"And right you shouldn't." A low voice growled, menacing, sending a shiver of fear up your spine. You whip around, hair lashing your face, to find Freddy glaring at you. "What were you thinking?"
In the flickering lights, you could just about make out Freddy's silhouette, positioned aggressively, and Bonnie's slighter frame. You shuddered, hoping that you could sink into the floor and never be seen again. "We...I..."
"Weren't thinking were you?" Freddy badgered. "Bet all your brain cells fell out, didn't they? And, not only did you go down there, but you dragged Mike down there as well! We had to look under every table before this stupid rabbit here," Freddy gestured to Bonnie who stared at the floor, guiltily, "Spoke up and told us where you had been! Gold, whatever next!"
"Sorry." Bonnie mumbled miserably, and you felt sympathy for the rabbit. "I didn't want to cause any trouble and..."
"Foxy is going insane." Freddy hissed, looming above you. "Drusilla has attempted to calm him, but he wouldn't have it! Chica's plainly confused and I'm trying to hold the joint together! You don't understand how difficult this is! And then you and Mike, here, decide to go wandering about with Gold!"
"I'm sorry." You yelp, glancing at Mike. "Mike just found a drawing of a child with the puppet. We wanted to find out whether customers were around when it was allowed out!"
Freddy opened his mouth, looking as if to scream, but calmed slightly. When he spoke, his voice came out shaking, with restrained menace. "If things are... secret... then you need not know, okay? The night's nearly over, and you will be meeting us backstage, after our second show, ten o'clock."
You nod, sighing in relief as Freddy strode away. Mike blinked. "I've never seen him that angry before, even when he was trying to kill me!"
"Me either." You murmur, positively shaking in fear. For once, in all the months you'd wandered the building, did you feel scared. You expected an angry Freddy to leap out and attack you, trusting only the light of the exit in front.
The bell went and the door allowed entrance and exit, and you pushed into the light, where the sun was rising slowly. You didn't want to be the target of anger. But, then again, you didn't want to be hearing whispers every once in a while, to have vivid nightmares, to constantly be reminded that the place you spent hours on end at, was the place where someone was murdered.
All in all, you didn't want to be fighting for your life.
