Nayan’s POV
The day couldn’t have felt more joyful or peaceful.
For the first time in what felt like forever, the house echoed with laughter instead of whispers. Everyone was present in the dining area, talking over one another, sharing stories, interrupting, teasing . the kind of chaos that felt warm rather than overwhelming.
Maa had taken full control of the conversation, narrating embarrassing childhood stories about Shreyas and Avy bhai.
“And then,” Maa continued dramatically, trying not to laugh, “Shreyas cried for two hours because his favourite red car went missing. He accused the entire house staff of stealing it.”
“MAA!” Shreyas groaned, dragging out the word like a child caught red-handed.
Avy bhai burst out laughing. “You locked yourself in your room and refused dinner that day!”
“That is called emotional attachment,” Shreyas defended, straightening in his chair.
“Attachment?” Maa scoffed. “You have been dramatic since birth.”
Both brothers whined in protest, trying to look annoyed but I could see it clearly. Beneath their fake irritation, they were happy.
Happy because I was smiling.
We sat at the dining table to have breakfast together, and this time I didn’t eat alone in my room. I sat with everyone. I listened. I laughed. I felt… included.
Maa had insisted I rest and have my breakfast in my room, but I refused softly. I didn’t want to go back to that room and sit in silence.
Seeing my determination, she didn’t force me.
Instead, she sat beside me on my right.
And Avy bhai quickly occupied the seat on my left.
Leaving absolutely no space for Shreyas.
“Excuse me?” Shreyas stared at the seating arrangement in disbelief. “Maa, Avy… this is not fair.”
They both shrugged innocently.
“What are you talking about?” Maa said, pretending to be confused.
“You can’t just keep my wife to yourselves,” he declared dramatically.
Papa chuckled, shaking his head, while Tanu tried to hide her smile.
“What?” Shreyas looked around. “Am I cracking a joke?”
“Pura din ussi ke paas chipka rehta hai,” Maa replied casually, picking up a bite and bringing it to my mouth. “Thoda time dusron ke saath bhi rehne de usse.”
I blushed as she fed me, feeling everyone’s attention.
“Haan, warna Nayan will get bored of your oldies ass,” Avy bhai added casually.
Papa and Tanu burst into laughter.
Maa immediately pulled his ear. “Language! He is still your elder brother.”
“Ahh! Maa!” Avy bhai winced as she twisted his ear harder.
Shreyas smirked in satisfaction. “Haan, bade par nikal aaye hain chote ke.”
He leaned over and smacked Avy bhai lightly on the head.
“Maa please! Leave my ear, it’s painful!” Avy bhai complained dramatically.
But Maa only twisted it a little more.
“Ahhh! Nayan! Save me!” he cried out, looking at me desperately.
